Good. His story is complete. He should be involved at least tangentially in the world if we’re in a similar timeframe but otherwise it needs to focus on a new protagonist.

Weiters refusing to let completed character stories actually be finished in sequels is annoying. It’s a crutch indicative of poor writing. It happens in Hollywood all the time, and we get subpar sequels because of it. Games need to avoid that death spiral, they’re not as beholden to actor name recognition the same way Hollywood is. Voice actors often have a lot more range because they’re masters of manipulating their voice and the character model can look like whatever it needs to.

Lemme guess, the main character’s name rhymes with “Ciri”? Just promise it won’t be anything like the fuckin’ series’ S02+?

I could see Ciri as the protagonist, it also wouldn’t surprise me if they take a note from Cyberpunk 2077 and allow players to create their own character.

Another game with a female lead incoming. As if there aren’t enough of those already.

Look, female leads are fine as long as the game is good. But it doesn’t get any bonus points anymore. Its no longer original. Metroid did it and it was cool. It was bonus points on top of an already good game. Same with Tomb Raider. But these days its like over 50% of all new games have a female protagonist. Its not special anymore like it used to be.

So, female leads in video games are fine when used and perceived as a novelty? Special and cool like they used to be? You can tolerate them if the game is good? Jesus man, I don’t know what to tell you…

It’s funny I feel this way about the amount of generic Brown-haired gruff man protagonists we got about 15 years back. Without the “they used to be novel”, because they’ve never been novel

This is not what I meant at all, but leave it to Lemmy to make Redditors look intelligent, I guess. This place has really gone downhill quick.

Female leads are fine as long as the game is good? Why are male leads fine even if the game is not good? Why does the gender matter either way?

You’re not exactly making yourself look intelligent there, both with your original post and this reply.

If what you **said **- there’s enough games with female leads; female leads are only fine as long as the game is good; female lead is bonus points for a good game; it’s no longer special - isn’t what you meant, then why didn’t you say what you meant?

I’ll bite the potential bait. What did you mean then?

I ask as a straight white dude that generally creates female characters in game and truly enjoy seeing how the game world reacts to the character (if it does) and find it enjoyable to experience challenges outside of those that generally color my world view.

It’s cool to be Geralt or Male Shepard but I’ve seen, read and played that story quite a few times. For my personal enjoyment I’d like to live in a world (especially another CDPR one, doubly so for the Witcher universe) as a female character. It opens up a shit ton of new dialog possibilities and quest choices.

Having played through Cyberpunk multiple times as both male and female V, there’s skme truly unique things that they do that are only possible by leveraging the PC’s gender when interacting with the world.

Roughly 50% of human beings are female. It’s only fitting that around 50%0 of games have female leads. It doesn’t need to be special, a female lead doesn’t need to justify her existence. It should be commonplace.

        If you’re a troll, whatever.

If you’re serious, most games have male leads. Apply your logic to them. They’re far too over-represented.

With any luck there will be some sort of character creation that is fully voiced. Maybe even allowed to choose an elf or dwarf, AFAIK there’s no mention that it’s a human exclusive genetic manipulation.

But I’d be happy with a straight male/female choice like Mass Effect or Cyberpunk or AC Valhalla where they are customisable but still voiced.

Or give me one character but make them compelling. Difficult thing will be they will always be compared to Geraldo

If the character was to be a witcher then canonically it must be a boy. Also I don’t remember if it’s stated outright but I think it needs to be a human boy. Witchers were created by humans, for humans so that’s who the mutagens were designed for and still only about 3 out of 10 boys would survive the trials. So I don’t think an elf or a dwarf would.

Fair enough, I couldn’t find any reference one way or the other except for presumption of the humans by humans part.

Though Ciri does show a way to be a female Witcher trainee with no signs but her own powers. Maybe you could choose a Lodge sorceress, an elven rogue style, a dwarven warrior or Witcher so they have their own weapons and skills etc.

I’m just spitballing here but as long as the game is well crafted and has Marcin Przybyłowicz do the music I am sold!

Ciri did the witcher trainings but didn’t undergo the mutations so she wouldn’t be able to use elixirs and wouldn’t have the usual witcher benefits. Also, the mutations would kill her because she’s a girl, so they can’t implement that. And her fate after The Witcher 3 depends on a playthrough so it might prove difficult to continue, unless they just make one of the endings the official one.

As fun as it would be to play any class in the world of the Witcher, I think the protagonist should be a witcher to fully focus on witcher builds etc. for the game to stand out from other fantasy RPGs. Perhaps they could introduce different witcher schools to choose/develop. But since the game will include Geralt, I sense he’ll be our trainer and hence it will the school of the wolf. Let’s wait and see.

Will be interesting to see whatever they do with it, hopefully it continues to be third person like TW3 and not Cyberpunk.

I wonder if you could choose to be a woman or an ethnic minority without the fanbase going berzerk.

I think there must be lore friendly ways to introduce diversity to a character creation system. Zerrikania has matriarchs and dark skin for example

I’m sure the majority of the people going insane are doing so because of concerns about the deeeeeep lore of the Witcher, and are not the same people that complain about any frame that contains a non white person, or an person of indeterminate gender. /S.

I’m sure people in fictional places can also travel and migrate.
