Directly voiced at the people who are responsible in a way intentionally designed to call them out, hold them accountable, and make them uncomfortable?

Like, you have “do nothing” as the ultimately good option in your meme. Are you literally spez? Is this a joke? This is the worst astroturf job I’ve literally ever seen.

u/spez knows your opinion and says fuck you anyway. If you believe otherwise then get off lemmy and go back to reddit. His past actions have shown that he couldn’t care less about users opinions.

Not providing his site with extra traffic that he is trying to bump by bringing back u/place before the IPO is the best protest.

Telling people to go on Reddit is just stupid. There only thing that works is to hit them in their wallets.

I think what op means is: 1 - if you generate traffic on Reddit by going to place, use it to educate others about Lemmy. 2 - don’t generate extra traffic on Reddit, this traffic numbers will be used to show investors that Reddit does generate heavy traffic and advertisers like traffic. This will be used to inflate the value during the upcoming IPO this is exactly why they make Place, they knew it was going to be vandalized (and they’re censoring a lot of it) but by simply going there you’re actually doing what they want you to do. 3 - writing fuck u spez over and over 1 doesn’t educate users on The existence of Lemmy, instead it focuses on Spez and make him more known to others. It also generates inflated traffic for Reddit towards the IPO.

              This was my take.

I’m watching from a distance but I’m not getting involved because Reddit want as much traffic right now as they can. They didn’t do this just for fun. They’re milking the bad publicity to get more publicity. Don’t fall for it

You’re just driving up traffic and engagement on reddit, at a time when Huffman desperately needs to convince advertisers that reddit still has a lot of traffic. It’s saving the company financially.

So yeah, not a great protest.

Bad press is going to spook investors significantly more than the additional traffic from Lemmy users would generate.

You are wildly overestimating the size of the entire Lemmy community. And we’re not talking about the whole of Lemmy either.

AND let’s be honest with ourselves, it isn’t Lemmy users driving this. There are like, dozens of us. It’s almost entirely pissed off Redditors.

100 pixels, arranged correctly, stress out Reddit a lot more than 100 missing impressions.

Everyone who left reddit or significantly reduced their time on reddit returning to constantly refresh a page advertisers won’t see that says “fuck spez” is helping to boost Reddit’s numbers. This isn’t just about whatever number of people left reddit for Lemmy.

IPOs are built around speculative value. The markets are watching what happens in real time to what happens to a cornerstone social media platform with an out-of-touch CEO (Twitter), and watching the valuations lose 47% of their value, whos users when given the slightest opportunity fled en masse to a competitor (Threads)

Then they look over at Reddit and see Huffman PRAISING Musk, and watching users form a populist revolt and open hostility towards the CEO. It looks a little bit familiar

We’re talking about traffic variations on like, maybe a percentage point. Fucking big whoop. If you’re an investor, that extra percent is peanuts. It is nothing. The nagging feeling that you’re going to end up in a twitter-esque bag holding scenario?? THAT is something.

Again, won’t disagree. But we all know they will ditch out any attacks on spez with their adminpower. But will they kill a big Lemmy art or the icons of the beloved 3rd party Apps?

The study of “r/place”, how it evolves, and the pattern of admin interference is a long standing r/place tradition. The discussion AFTER r/place lasts much longer than r/place itself.

Admins getting caught astroturfing “fuck spez” IS the story. A pansy tribute will get 0 airtime. Putting admins on their heels and forcing them to interfere to whitewash the messaging is actually AWESOME for the continued dialogue around Reddit and spez’ incompetence

And if they DON’T whitewash it, or can’t keep up, and fuck spez’ remains plastered everywhere too… That’s a different BUT STILL GREAT story.

Posting fuck spez is a can-not-lose scenario for driving discussion. It’s driving this one, right now, as I type this.

Assuming that the protesters only visit Reddit to send a message through Place, they are a drop in a bucket compared to the site-wide traffic generated by bots and the people who stayed, do not hinder the goal of sending that message.
