when people are in desperate need, and they live in the mountains, and all the roads are washed out, you use what works

Mules are maybe the most useful freak of nature (sorta) for humans. They’re still used surprisingly widely - even the US military still keeps them on hand, for similar cases to this one: the terrain is so fucked that ground vehicles are going to have a hard time getting to certain areas.

Mules are better over extremely rough terrain - they’re shorter and stockier. Horses evolved to run over open grasslands, plains, and rocky steppes.

Horses are way too flighty. If they step in hole or get stuck in the mud they go crazy and flail about. Mules, on the other hand, will remain calm and stop.

I guess sometimes fitting the “stubborn as a mule” stereotype is a good thing.

My town in NC just had it’s annual “Mule Days Festival,” which celebrated the sturdy animal. The town even has a large statue of a Mule at the entrance to the “downtown” area. I wonder if the mules used to carry supplies were recently paraded through the streets here?

Man hearing the story unfold live on the radio with basically noting else to do and nowhere to go has been an experience. They were trying to anyone who could to bring them some propane to keep their generators running, i hope they got some.
