Elon Musk gave another $56 million to elect Donald Trump and other Republicans in the final weeks of the 2024 election, bringing to at least $132 million the amount spent by the world’s richest person to elevate his allies to the White House and Congress, federal filings show.

The donations — revealed in disclosures with the Federal Election Commission Thursday — show that the Tesla Inc. and SpaceX chief executive officer has poured money into the Washington trifecta: funding Trump’s White House bid, along with supporting House and Senate Republicans.

Musk, who had only given modest political donations until the 2024 election cycle, funneled $43.6 million in the first half of October into America PAC, the group he founded, bringing his total for the year to $118.6 million. He also spent millions more spreading money around the political system which helps him build a network of allies.

This makes me want to do math.

$132M is just under 0.05% (one-half of one-tenth of one percent) of $269.8B.

If you were a millionaire, having a net worth of one million dollars, this would be like making a $500.00 donation. Net worth of TEN million dollars? That’s a whopping $5000.00 contribution.

Buying a social media network: $40 billion

Buying a US election: $0.13 billion

    Democracy is fucked.

The guy is pretty fucking dumb, Republicans don’t want to subsidize EV purchases, they cut spendings all over the place including space exploration… How does he thinks his condition will improve under them?

At this point I’m comfortable saying that that is physically impossible for him.

If Musk has been talking to Putin for the past two years… Maybe he’s in hock to Russia? Maybe Putin is strongly suggesting it would benefit Musk’s health to make sure Trump is elected?

This is what I keep thinking. If we drew a Venn diagram of hardcore republicans and EV buyers, they would be two distant, non-intersecting circles.

Giving them money would change their stance on these key issues. The state can subsidize all those industries at the same time.

It think that represents only 1/1800th of his wealth.

Divide your wealth by 1800 to get some perspective. I’ve spent that much without much thought.

The relationship that you and I have with money is fundamentally different from the relationship these ultra-rich have with money, though. It is an addiction for them. Spending money without a guaranteed return is anathema to them, it just isn’t done, no matter how small the amount.

He has a motive behind these expenses. And I really think it is because he is afraid. Terrified, in fact, of what happens after Trump isn’t elected.
