Listen I love NMS for what it has become, but of course they would say that. They know that (the veil of) personal investment in their userbase’s woes is good marketing. What would the answer otherwise be? “fuck your save, start over”?

And if they can’t fix it, they can at least say “we tried”.

Deep Field (developers of Unfortunate Spacemen and Abiotic Factor) has actually recreated entire saves for AF that people have lost. The main director has popped into the discord to tell the people himself that he would fix the issue. I thought that was pretty cool.

TFW I spent hours of my life debugging an issue that exclusively happens with czech/hungarian keyboard layouts and no one remembers it (to be fair the game was much more obscure than NMS)

From what I’ve heard they also specifically used the insane “let’s make the factory into a bowl of spaghetti with a radioactive giant swirl towering over it”-save to do some heavy optimization improvements.

Some players take games to insane lengths in their saves, and it seems those saves can sometimes be hugely useful assets to study, and learn a lot about the game when put into that kind of state.

Edit: found it https://forums.factorio.com/viewtopic.php?t=101341 the devs also fixed the save for the guy and later updated the game with a fix lol

i cant remember off the top of my head exactly which ones, but Wube will take bug reports from vanilla saves and modded saves and fix them all! Great Devs!

They even the concept (with permission) of someone else’s game that they reengineered from the ground up to help multithread the game. They’re simply amazing!

Even Nintendo did it with a Zelda and another time for Metroid. I dont specifically remamber which ones tho. Players would get soft locked out of progression and you could send it in and they’d fix it. That was many moons ago tho. No way they’d put that much effort into anything these days.

Almost every developer has a system to report bugs.

In the old days it was an email or a forum, lots of devs use Steam forums and discord for this exact scenario still in todays age.

Do you have any devs in mind that don’t have a bug reporting feature where they almost always ask for a save?

Reporting bugs isn’t the same as getting personal assistance from a dev to fix an issue specific to you.

How so? Someone looks at your save and fixes the specific issue related to it. You also have to report it for it to be able to be looked at and fixed as well dude…… how else would they know the issue or be able to fix it…?

The only difference is a dev getting some marketing out of it with this specific case. Every save issue bug is a specific issue that needs to be looked at, you are always getting “personal care” with these issues.

The difference is some devs are recreating save files from scratch using data in a corrupted savefile. The difference is sometimes lead programmers do that. This isn’t WoW where you get your gold back because of a scam, this is allowing you to resume a broken save which often cannot be salvaged at all.

Did you read the article? Because this is talking about save issue bugs, not a gold issue.

Even Bethesda Blizzard has a system in place to report this stuff, so it’s incredibly ironic you used them as an example….

Ah yes, World of Warcraft, the famously Bethesda game. Did you read my comment? This isn’t some public policy that every developer does. It is rare and should be encouraged. You acting like it’s not a big deal just diminishes what is good customer service.

Well, usually if it’s from a breaking update or something it’s “saves from previous updates aren’t guaranteed to work with future updates.” They don’t say “fuck you” but they usually also don’t promise to fix it. I agree it’s a business strategy though, but they should be commended for it or their business strategy stops being this.

Why is this news? Do many devs not fix buggy saves?

I’ve sent more than a few to a few different devs at their request, it helps them immensely to have a buggy save, because sometimes they can’t recreate the conditions.

While true, the case in this article is that the game developers are fixing the broken save file for the player so they can load it and play it. Not just reporting the game is making bugged saves. Most game devs do not do this. Some do but the vast majority do not.

A lot do, they just don’t make a marketing gimic out of it.

Do you think every little developer is gonna get a spot light for what they do? For every story you hear there’s thousands already doing it and more, but they aren’t popular so they don’t get a little shoutout, other than in their communities.

Go explore some Steam discussions and see the devs in there asking for saves, I don’t know what else to say here, but this isn’t news. Almost any dev will care if you send them a save and a specific issue.

No, but they tweeted what they did, it didn’t have to made public by the dev, but they obviously did it for the viral marketing, and then an article picks it up and here we are. Someone is being accused of saying an article is commissioned lmfao.

If every dev that did this tweeted about it, yeah you would hear about it more, but most devs have better things to do than get some stupid marketing for things almost every dev already does.

So I ask you, why else would someone tweet about a mundane thing like fixing a bug?

                  Who is they?

To my knowledge, an individual NMS employee with no named affiliation in his handle tweeted about the situation, certainly with a note of personal pride. Is that what you find inappropriate? That a person was individually proud of something that you find unremarkable?

Because if HelloGames has been pushing this beyond a retweet or something, I wasn’t aware.

Right but that’s a hell of a different situation than saying you are on your own, we don’t want your save.

Pretty sure EA/FC has a bug reporting feature if not an email or forum you can use to submit saves and talk about issues and they get looked into.

Not everything CAN be fixed, and sometimes it’s not a “save issue bug”

It would be nice if they could at least acknowledge the broken (removed?) PS4 to PS5 save transfer function. I was interested in some of the recent updates but found out those same updates had removed the feature I needed to continue my old save. So I just didn’t play instead.

It IS an 8 year old game at this point though - many games don’t get fixes beyond the first patch or 2.
