Not only that, but if this was 2016, Bernie’s win would have ensured trumpism didn’t happen.

The irony: This is basically what we have. When it comes to action, as senators, Kamala and Bernie voted the same way on most issues. Obviously, they are not the same people, but their viewpoints led to more or less the same voting actions.

I really don’t get the “Bernie would have won” mentality. The biggest issues that people officially complain about when it comes to Harris is that she is ‘going to bring about socialism’. He’s actually a self described socialist flavor, and all the “moderates” who claim they are socially liberal but fiscally conservative would still let the moneyed interests win.

They were going to scream socialism/communism no matter what anyways.

If they’re going to use the label anyways then we might as well run an actual socialist.

Many people who were going to vote for Bernie ended up voting for Trump. He most definitely would have fared better than an unlikable candidate if the DNC didn’t kneecap him.

On the other hand, many of the people that voted for Bernie only voted for him because they hated Clinton and/or the wider Dem establishment, not because they supported his policies.

I don’t think that’s true. I don’t see how anyone who saw themselves as principled supporters of Sanders could ever vote for Trump, they’re diametrically opposed. They share nothing in common. The only people who voted that way weren’t serious to begin with.

I voted for Sanders in the 2016 primary. In hindsight, I think he would have suffered a political wipeout somewhere between Corbyn '19 and McGovern '72. There are shit-tons of oppo that Clinton (and Biden) never used against him, stuff that supporters can explain away in theory but sounds absolutely toxic to swing voters. Combine that with Trump getting the full backing of his right-wing base, corporate America, and a not-insignificant chunk of the more craven Democrats, and it would have been a total disaster.

I don’t ever want to hear you guys bitch about old people in politics while you continue to invoke dinosaur Sanders. We gave great young people on the left ffs. Fuck Sanders, he’s ineffectual. I want a leader who can get things done, not another Carter who is right but can’t get the support of even his own party

Edit: so you guys don’t want young leaders? The down votes really show that you guys disagree that the old need to make room for the young. So don’t wonder why nothing changes

Bernie is a Senator. He’s not blocking anyone from getting elected unless they’re literally in Vermont running for Senate once every 6 years.

He does a hell of a lot of lifting and has brought more light to the left side of politics than anyone else in that last 15 years.

Well, first off this was 8 years ago. So you aren’t comparing apples to apples. And secondly, Bernie inspired so many young voters. Trump only inspired hate from old dumb people.

I always argue age (on the higher end) isn’t necessarily the end all be all, there are some extremely sharp older folks out there who have good valuable insights, desires, etc and therefore shouldn’t have an age cap per-say.

What we should have is mental ability checks because it happens way too often that someone is clearly in cognitive decline yet they’re still allowed to hold their seat.

It’s an extremely simplistic to just say old = bad.

There’s a lot of idiot young people too
