Things are back to normal at the top of the list for most played racing games on Steam in October 2024: After The Crew 2 leapfrogged everyone following the announcement of an offline mode being implemented and the game being severely discounted. The Crew 2 dropped down the order a bit, with BeamNG.drive, Forza Horizon 4 and 5 taking back the podium spots.

The biggest surprise, however, can be found a bit further down: DiRT Rally 2.0 actually posted a new all-time player peak record in October, eclipsing the 3,486-player mark set in March of 2021 at 5,074. A recent poll here on OverTake showed that most of our community actually prefers DR2.0 over the newer EA Sports WRC - and the price for the older rally title dropping to as low as €1.99 in late October certainly helped, too.

Yeah… I’m glad I’m not the only one that doesn’t like it that much. I would even go so far as to say that there really aren’t any “good” rally games that I’ve played. There are some that do one or two things well, but none that really stand out and make me say “I really want to play that one”.

AC’s rally stuff is interesting because it looks great, has very good FFB (if you tune the surfacefx correctly), and it’s very flexible, but the content is basically two cars and a handful of maps that are rather lackluster. RBR is the only thing that’s really comparable since it’s all mods too, it’s similar in flexibility but has way more content and the gameplay is OK, but it looks it’s age so it’s a bit hard for me to get into it after playing something newer.

I actually couldn’t get on with DR2 and much preferred DR1. For less than £2 it’s a bargain so I’m not surprised it has more players now.
