I’m not religious at all (maybe a bit anti-theist) but when I saw local pastors shuttering their Methodist churches so they could rebrand as “independent” and continue spewing their hate; I knew the organization had to be doing something right.

there was some drama within the umc in recent years, the far-right congregations split off into their own thing. there’s probably some still moving away from the ‘too liberal’ umc.

Well written, and I appreciate their willingness to use their platform to advocate for the civil rights of minorities. Actions do speak louder than words, but the choice to make public official statement still has a positive impact

This alone already exposes the UMC at large to the fascists’ naughty list. It will probably be up to local conferences and churches to decide if they want to hide “illegals” under the floorboards. The UMC doesn’t have the same sort of direct control over its churches that, say, the Vatican has over its religion.

It would be wild to see a Sunday service raided by ICE or a swat team though.

One of the conditions for being a tax exempt religious organization is staying out of politics. If they denounce a particular politician or party they could lose their status.

Yeah it’s a bit wishy washy. At least where I live churches are voting places and regularly have one candidates signs on their propertys

I highly disagree, I think it’s counter intuitive to our countries principles but 🤷‍♂️
