Romans abandoned the republic and so were cursed to become Italians.

Their leaders even (unofficially) inherited the title of Pontifex Maximus.

You’re right Rome historically loved those provinces like children. Oh man ya and those empires have all historically treated Italy so well!

Rome was better to its provinces than many other empires.

I did not say good, just better.

Rome, at least during the Principate, lived by the words of the Emperor Tiberius - a good shepherd shears his sheep, not skins them. The Romans weren’t benevolent overlords, but they were certainly practical ones, which puts them a good few steps over most rulers of antiquity.

I think it says something about the quality of your contributions that my face lights up every time I see your name, particularly when you reply to me. That has nothing to do with the topic, just thought you’d like to know.

(There’s not much to add to the topic anyway. Even their “diversity” was a practical approach to managing such a large hegemony.)

Genocided so hard they ended up in the Senate, truly a terrible fate.

PSA: Ancient numbers of their enemies’ vanquishing are rarely reliable.

is colonialism a knock-on effect? I mean, the US came to it twice removed from Rome…

I look at this image and think of all the indigenous peoples colonized by these countries and it’s staggering… damn splinter, you set the template for a whole lot of suffering…
