Ultimately it is the individual’s decision what they want to stand up to. It’s not “catering to bigotry” to choose to avoid a single battle. That’s akin to putting the onus on marginalized groups to educate hegemonic groups when they demonstrate ignorance. It’s a powerful thing when it happens, but it is completely within one’s right to just keep to themselves and go home peacefully for the night.

When driving, I have to be concerned about whether what I’m doing could lead to someone coming after me for it. If I’m by myself, I might risk it. When I have my family with me, I don’t do those things.
