Summary

Republican support for House Speaker Mike Johnson’s re-election is faltering ahead of a vote this week, with key figures like Rep. Chip Roy undecided despite Donald Trump’s endorsement.

Roy and others cite concerns over Johnson’s handling of past legislative battles, including a contentious budget fight.

With a slim GOP majority, Johnson cannot afford defections, but dissent persists among Republicans like Andy Harris and Andy Biggs.

Roy has suggested alternatives, including Byron Donalds and Jim Jordan, as doubts grow about Johnson’s ability to deliver on the party’s agenda in the new Congress.

It’d be hilarious if they can’t pick a speaker for months on end

I hope Johnson gets the boot before they’re supposed to certify the election. It’s gonna delay the soggy carrot at least a couple of month.

Serious questions: If Trump and Vance die/leave would that make Musk president if he was speaker? Is that even allowed since he’s not a native citizen? Would they just skip him and go next in line?

IIRC, if someone in the line of succession is ineligible (underage, non-native citizen, already been president for too many years, etc), then they are skipped over.

Insurrectionists are also ineligible, but that hasn’t mattered so I wont hold my breath for the courts to uphold other conditions.

Legally no, musk would not in the line of sucession if he were speaker.

But then again, the constitution only says a natural born citizen is required to be president, it never explicitly required the same for acting presidents. Speaker of the House never actually become president, only act as president. So there is a possibility the Supreme Court could rule that Acting Presidents don’t need to be a natural born citizen. I mean that’d be crazy, but crazy things like Jan 6, and a Felon becoming president already happened so… 🤷‍♂️

They already had the ideas. They just needed all the pieces in place.

If it wasn’t so absolutely terrifying, it would be hilarious to watch every possible legal, judicial, procedural, constitutional, and legislative loophole be used in varying combinations to bypass each of the above.

Oh, so we can have Speaker Arnold Schwarzenegger as Acting President? Cool. I mean, I don’t agree with every of his policies, be he’d be an honorable person to act as president.

You know, it’s very possible that the GOP’s perpetual inability to elect a speaker could be the best thing for this country for the next two years.
