I swim year-round and this time of the year is hell. It’s summer and everyone decided to be more fit even though they know they will give up in 2 weeks, so the pool will be fucking packed with a bunch of people that don’t know the rules. I’m almost tempted to take break

I got into outdoor sports to stay away from gyms. The only exception is I use indoor climbing gyms for training. You should try lake, river, or ocean swimming. I find swimming shore to shore really fun. It’s like travelling through the wilderness but with swimming 😁

I’m not a fan of outdoor swimming and it would take 2hr+ for me to get somewhere I can swim outdoors, the pool is 2 subway stations away from my house, not an option unfortunately.

Yeah. I switched to free weights last week in prep for not being able to access any of the machines at the fitness centre.

At least the running lanes at the track usually stay empty. I needed to work on my cardio more, anyway.

It’s like when ‘influencers’ push a certain touristy destination. That place goes from quaint and peaceful, to literal hell on earth, people destroying stuff, not paying attention, over crowded, garbage everywhere…same thing happens at the gym…people who dedicate their time to ensuring they stay healthy get pushed out by people filming themselves, people standing around talking about dumb crap, using all the machines improperly and taking up all the parking space because a group of 4 can’t carpool…fads ruin things

Also theres nothing worse than a crowded lane-swimming pool with casuals when you’re trying to get a proper workout in. I never get mad about it, I understand why everyone is there and glad they’re making an effort but theres rules that need to be followed.

Literally never said that but I’ve been swimming for 4 years at that place now. I have seen 0 people from the new year’s wave actually stick around. They all think a new number on the date changes things but it doesn’t, it never gets easier or harder, it’s about you yourself changing and that has no specific date to happen.

I disagree. It does get easier to stick to something hard when you reach certain emotional milestones that drive your motivation. I’m not speaking specifically to New Year resolutions, but just in general.

OC literally talking about stopping doing the thing they do to get in shape, because of other people being dicks. You attempting to defend those people’s actions, as though OC—the one who is aware of etiquette so all can enjoy—is somehow the one who’s against people getting in shape.

You have defended the baddies by using the good guy’s point, entirely too focused on gaslighting with it to realise. This, ironically supporting behaviours that stop people from exercising.

Next few days? For the next whole year! Why do you think gyms make their memberships so difficult to leave?

Why do you think gyms make their memberships so difficult to leave

Seems like something that’s mostly just an issue in the US. I just went online and cancelled my gym membership, it was like 3 clicks and I got a confirmation email of which day was the last day of the membership. Never heard from them since.

At least in Germany most gyms have 2 year contracts, if you want to be able to cancel your membership monthly you usually pay about twice as much

Gym owners bank on the fact that 90% of their customers never show up.

Right, because they sign up at the beginning of the year and show up for three days.

I always buy my membership in January, there’s always a discount and I know I’ll use it anyway. It’s always way too packed in January and February though, i hate it, I have to go either super early or late for it to be bearable.

I don’t understand why you need a gym. Use a treadmill? Just run somewhere. Lifting weights? Just find something heavy and lift it.

My oldest friend stayed fit this way. Just actually going places and using random ass things to lift (backpacks full of books, paint cans tied to a mop like barbells, tires; anything heavy enough that it was a workout), along with other exercises that didn’t require machines or spending money.

The simple answer is that you don’t need a gym to get fit. Same as you don’t need a car to get around when you can just walk / cycle / uber. It just makes things more convenient for some people.

Personally I prefer to run on a treadmill in an air conditioned room rather that out in the sun, some people prefer otherwise and that’s fine too.

Lifting heavy things is great, but proper equipment makes it easier to have a balanced workout and is easy to use. It can also be helpful to have a specific place that you go away from home to work out to help get you in the right mental headspace. Necessary? Definitely not, but for me I know I would never have come so far in my fitness journey without the gym.

At my gym I made a body analysis which identified some muscle dysbalances. This was really helpful to create a workout plan.
There are also a lot of muscles I cannot train specifically when at home, because I do not have the right equipment at home. The trainers in the gym are also really helpful in teaching me how to get my body in a good shape.

On top of that I don’t find it easy to establish the habit of doing workout at home. I prefer a change of location and also a dedicated time. My gym, which is located on my way back home from work really helps with keeping my schedule. I am doing this for 1.5 years now, two times a week and it works really great for me.

You see, everybody ia different and for some people like me a gym is a really nice thing. If a home workout is the right thing for you and you can also save money in the meantime, that’s a great thing.

Gyms are great. I don’t want to run or cycle somewhere when it’s pouring rain, or when it’s -30C outside. I’d have a hard time keeping track and incrementing weights with random heavy objects found outside.

A pair of dumbbells with adjustable weights and a decent indoor cycle machine thingy would technically do it for me, but at the cost of several months of gym membership for the former and years of gym fees for the latter, in addition to taking up space in my home and needing to be moved if I move (because currently I live in a rental apartment to be closer to my job)

And I do really just love lifting weights, it’s the only form of exercise that doesn’t make me feel excruciating mental anguish somehow. Cycling with a podcast on is also bearable, but then I can’t do that safely in the city. Yeah we have pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, but unfortunately you do still have to eventually cross roads and then you have to hear things properly, because vision alone has limited width and assholes can run red lights. It doesn’t help that my cycling style whenever I need to actually get anywhere on a bicycle, is literally “uh dude how have you not been hit by a car yet?” because I always leave too late and I don’t like going slow. It might all be an ADHD thing, really.

Because it’s all an impulse decision

“New Year’s Resolutions” are the exact opposite of setting good goals

      Good goals:

      • need to be definable
        • “I will start restricting calories and target a 1lb per week loss”
        • not “get in shape”
      • need to be actionable
        • “I will start making plans right now, and implementing them tonight”
        • not “I will wait till a specific time of the year”
      • need to be sustainable
        • “I will adjust my strategy to work around my daily habits and otherwise be flexible”
        • not “NO MORE SWEETS”

Yeah whatever floats your goat really. My brother used to load his backpack full of textbooks and do pushups/home workouts and it worked for him. To each their own as long as long as whatever you do is working and you use proper technique.
