I blame the novel (and film) Contact, where a key plot point is that the aliens find out about earth by picking up Nazi television broadcasts from the star Vega.
The reality is that, thanks to the inverse square law, they would need some truly massive and ginormous antenna technology to even have a chance at detecting these signals at 25 ly.
