Summary
Texas has seen a spike in abandoned newborns since its abortion ban, with some infants found dead in dumpsters or ditches.
Critics link the rise to reduced access to abortion, cuts to prenatal care, underfunded safe haven programs, and fear of deportation among undocumented women.
Texas Republicans have resisted funding awareness campaigns for safe haven laws, instead allocating $165 million to crisis pregnancy centers that prioritize deterring abortion over aiding women.
The lack of support has drawn condemnation, highlighting the broader consequences of restrictive reproductive policies.
Just a reminder that Texas has safe haven drop boxes at fire stations and post offices specifically for dropping off unwanted babies, but they’ve slashed the funding and refuse to publicize their existence in favor of “crisis intervention centers”
Just a reminder that Texas has safe haven drop boxes at fire stations and post offices specifically for dropping off unwanted babies,
In case anyone thinks this is a new concept, one of the most influential pieces of early Renaissance architecture (Ospedale degli Innocenti) had a rotating drop-off port for babies. There was someone on the other side of the wall 24/7.
Edit: Atlas Obscura has an article on it
This is amazing. A baby carousel, statue of Mary pointing to the correct location. Baby goes around a loop, down a slide and lands in a manger. Amazing! But the article definitely needs more pictures!
Cruelty was always the end goal.
The GOP hates children, that’s why they want to make sure they don’t get fed. All the screaming about ‘abortions’ is really about controlling and OWNING women.
They’re just hoping the majority of these abandoned or otherwise dead children are non-white.
Almost as if people are their own fully functioning human beings, and punishing them with life-altering consequences makes them desperate not to get punished, and not just suddenly obedient to you in all things ignoring all their own priorities and decisions.
Babies left in dumpsters is an atrocity. Those responsible for causing the societal change that started it need to be hung. Don’t blame the parent that didn’t want the child when they were forced to have it. Who the hell thinks it’s a good idea to force women to have children they don’t want??? THAT’S HOW YOU GET UNWANTED DELIQUENTS IN SOCIETY YOU INBRED SLOTHS! UNLESS YOU’RE PAYING FOR THE MOTHERS TIME, BODY REPAIRS, AND EMOTIONAL DAMAGE YOU HAVE NO SAY IN IT! End of fuckin story.
Don’t blame the parent that didn’t want the child when they were forced to have it
My brother in Christ…
Leaving an infant in a dumpster to starve or freeze or dehydrate or be crushed to death is fucking villainous behavior, regardless of the political climate.
The BARE minimum moral responsibility that these parents have is to give the baby to someone who might take care of it. A family member. An orphanage. Hell leave it near a police station and make it the state’s problem. Just don’t leave it in a dumpster. Or you are a piece of shit.
Morality argument notwithstanding, you’re far too optimistic about some of the alternatives you listed.
Giving a newborn to family doesn’t work when your family is dead or disowned you for being pregnant in the first place. And leaving a child near a police station and driving away is an excellent way to find yourself at the wrong end of a child abandonment charge.
The only viable option for some people that you listed is an orphanage, and even then, that’s still not a fool-proof guarantee to absolve legal/financial responsibilities as a parent.
Dude I’m not naive. Of course there are challenges and consequences involved in giving up a baby. I didn’t mention them because I thought this went without saying, but: Parents are morally obligated to choose to take on those challenges and consequences rather than throwing the baby in a dumpster.
You risk a child abandonment charge? Wtf are you talking about?? Then risk it. Don’t throw a baby in a dumpster.
There’s just no world where “don’t blame the parents” makes sense here. Regardless of how much misery it might cause the parents to relinquish the baby in a humane way, it’s still on them to do so. I’m running out of ways to say this. You all are wild.
I want you to imagine something for a moment. Don’t just read it, really visualise it.
In front of you stands a girl, she’s 14 years old. Her body and mind are broken as a result of months of rape and abuse at the hands of sex traffickers. With no other option, she gives birth in a filthy ally and is forced by her circumstances to do one of the most heartbreaking and dispicable acts imaginable - let her baby die.
Are you seriously saying you would look this child in the eye and tell her it was her fault? That she is the one to blame? That she should be punished for what she went through?
This is the level of desperation and suffering the people who are resorting to this are experiencing. This is the sick reality for people, probably closer to you than you realize.
So maybe think for while next time you want to start talking about who’s “morally obligated” to do things.
It goes without saying that nobody should throw a living being in a dumpster. I’m not arguing against that, and I explicitly mentioned that I’m not addressing the morality side of your argument.
Rather, I am addressing your idealistic and unrealistic beliefs that a parent can always just relinquish a baby in a humane way, as though that’s an option that’s both consistently possible irrespective of the circumstances and as simple to do as merely leaving the baby on the curb of a building owned by government services.
No shit, leaving an infant in a dumpster is the worst possible thing a parent can choose to do. But, unless you’ve had the experience of actually trying to permanently relinquish an unwanted child to the state or an organization and are familiar with the challenges and roadblocks put in place to make that as difficult as possible, you’re doing little other than virtue signaling when asserting that they “could have just done this instead.”
Instead of unconditionally condemning individuals for immoral acts that likely were made out of desperation, we should be looking at why someone would think throwing a baby in fucking dumpster is the solution to their problem. Nobody other than a psychopath would consider that to be the default solution, and unless you can prove that 100% of people who do it are diagnosed psychopaths, you should be taking a closer look into where society failed at providing appropriate resources and education to parents who want to humanely relinquish their children to the state.
I’m not saying anyone who does it is a misunderstood saint with a gun pointed at their head, but fuck—don’t just blame individuals while ignoring the systemic problems.
Regardless of how much misery it might cause the parents to relinquish the baby in a humane way, it’s still on them to do so. I’m running out of ways to say this. You all are wild.
You are talking about a group of people who are angry at the state for ruining their lives by becoming parents not as a matter of choice but under duress. Abortion having legal consequences and surrender oftentimes saddling these unwilling people with lifelong consequences due to the means of tracking and investigation available there isn’t really an “out” here. So these dumpster kids to their parents at birth become incredibly personal symbols of oppression, pain, removal of autonomy and one’s own life losing value. It’s very difficult to ask someone to value a life when they feel their own lives have lost value. Accepting a harder but more moral path is more likely to be followed through when you feel like you have something worth losing. The discarding of life can be seen as a form of reciprocated violence by individuals who feel like they themselves were discarded.
It may even be instinctually sourced. A lot of mammals placed in a position of extreme stress will kill their young. From what we’ve witnessed throughout history Humans are no exception.
Parents are people that want a baby. I do not know what people beeing forced to carry a unwanted mass to term is. A slave? Or a prisoner? trafficing victim? There should be a word for it when someone is forced by the goverment to destroy their body for the foverments viles. any case they are a victim, as much as the baby. They just had to suffer longer.
Banning abortion leads to babies in dumpsters. That’s just a direct consequence. The blame lies on the legislation for creating this situation in the first place - without abortion bans, babies don’t end up in dumpsters. With abortion bans, they do.
Blame should be placed on where we can actually address the problem. Moralism just confuses the issue.
The correct procedure is put them in a basket and send down river.
SO? Who CARES what happens to the Fetus when it’s born?
-Pro Life Republicans!
Welp, it looks like Soylent Green aged like milk.
Now they can make Soylent Green bars out of babies!
Holy shit I’m gonna go to hell for that though ain’t I?
Chili’s will source their baby back ribs from Texas now
(Don’t worry, I’ll see you there, save me a seat)
Holy shit I’m gonna go to hell for that though ain’t I?
Hopefully not before the lawmakers who created this nightmare in the first place.
Why would you go to Hell just for making a Modest Proposal?
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…
Of course they don’t care. The babies aren’t being aborted.
Offtopic, but my mom always make jokes that she found me in a dumpster and that I was adopted. I did not like the “jokes”, but reading this headline just got a chuckle remembering my mom’s stupid jokes.
Be nice to her for picking you out of trash, you ungrateful dick😠
Filial Piety in a nutshell

These
peoplepoliticians lack empathy, and among other things, basic human decency. I’m disgusted how so many human beings can be such monsters.I honestly can’t tell if you’re referring to the mothers who are being forced to carry these unwanted pregnancies to term or the politicians that put the laws in place.
Yes.
