Pope Francis seemingly put his own spin on telling women to ‘smile more,’ urging nuns to abandon “vinegar faces,” and stop speaking with the devil.

The Pope, 88, emphasized the importance of friendliness and love in embodying the virtues of the Catholic Church as he spoke to a group of Dominican sisters visiting the Vatican Sunday, The Times reported.

“Sometimes in my life, I have met nuns with a vinegar face, and that’s not friendly,” the Pope remarked. “That’s not something that helps to attract people. Vinegar is nasty, and nuns with a vinegar face—let’s not even talk about it.”

The Pope also urged the nuns to follow Jesus’ example of speaking to everyone—except the Devil. “No dialogue with the Devil, understood?” he stressed, warning against allowing jealousy and other human frailties to provide entry points for evil.

Among human frailties, the Pope addressed gossip as a substantial hurdle for women.

“Please, distance yourself from gossip,” he urged. “To ask this of a woman is heroic but, come on, let’s move forward and no gossip.” He called on the sisters to instead be “heralds of affability.”

The copy/pasted article is missing the final paragraph, which I found delightful:

“In a lighter moment, Francis commented on the lack of young novices in the group, expressing concern about the dwindling numbers of women joining religious life.”

    Gosh. Wonder why that is?

Honestly… I’d avoid it even if they’re wasn’t any rape… Why would I sign up to be told not to have sex and to serve a bunch of old men… And then be told to smile more…

Is it just me, or has the Pope suddenly and very recently taken a turn into being a very shitty person?

I get that he’s always had some problematic views, but he’s become more extreme lately. Or at least, that’s what the coverage seems to be.

You have to be a shitty person to be a pope. What is this talk about ‘suddenly’?

My wife always thought he was bullshitting. The church was trying a rebrand thing. They retired the pope that was in Hitler youth and got the cool ‘young’ still old pope that is more friendly towards gay people and dogs going to heaven. He never really felt legit to her.

Surely the zen of perpetual “resting bitch face” towards men is one of the selling points of being a nun?

Two nuns were riding bicycles through the old town on their way back to the convent. The one in front led them down a cobblestone road. The one in back said “I’ve never come this way before!”

"The one in front led them down a side road. The one in back said “huh, I’ve never come this way before”. The one in front said "yeah, it’s the cobblestones "

Switching that around adds not punch to the reveal.

Sure, but that’s not a double entendre. Double entendres are ambiguous. Your example is a pun.

Isn’t it? Come this way is still double. You just don’t realize it’s double until the end. Extra surprise.

Is it really a double entendre if it’s unambiguous? I can’t think of any other double entendre jokes that are spoiled by revealing a single interpretation.

Not realizing it’s a double entendres is part of double entendre humor. Some people are clever enough to figure it out right away, and some are not. That is part of the humor.

I think you’re right. It switches the joke to a pun the latter way. That said, there can still be a moment of recognition as the pun sets in.

I kinda prefer the pun version. But I’m also a dad, and so inclined towards puns.

To be fair, he’s always smiling and his predecessor had to be the world’s least photogenic Pope, so it’s probably something that he’s focused on doing himself.
