AFAICT, TikTok didn’t have to do anything. Looks like the law is all about preventing distribution of the app. So… why’d they shut it down?

It was a stunt. Incoming administration has been saying all week they were gonna “save” it. They pulled the plug temporarily as an FU to Biden and support for the incoming fascist that they know they can control better (with stunts just like this).

It also prohibits " Providing internet hosting services to enable the distribution, maintenance, or updating of such foreign adversary controlled application for users within the land or maritime borders of the United States." I’d say “maintenance” includes the hosting of new content.

It seems like the law prohibited distribution, but not use, is what I’m saying. So people could keep using it if Bytedance kept it up, right?

Correct. This was all just theater so that TikTok could put up a message in front of several million users saying how good of a guy Trump is.

BD had a dramatic nonsense hissy fit, and wanted Biden to make an Executive Order before he left office, barring that, they wanted to give the elbow to US users so there’d be a stink, which they did, and which there was, the fact they’re now granting access back means it was all just a big show, the fact remains though the lawful act of Congress remains, so Trump will have to make and Executive Order of his own once he takes office, which means he will most likely be sued by those who seek the Act of Congress to be enforced, and a judge will decide if the Congressional order gets executed or stayed

Not just “a judge”. SCOTUS. And we all know how that’ll go.

Did they? Or did Apple and Google pull the app because the law went into affect today and Trump isn’t actually president yet. All they had at the beginning of the day was a one day promise from Biden to not enforce it.

Doubt. I expect them to gradually shift the algorithm to push more and more MAGA until it’s just as trashy as Twitter.

No, but Biden says he wasn’t going to enforce, so the incoming admin would have to do it.

And I doubt Trump would want to piss off 170 million Americans on his first day.

He’ll want to spread it out over the four years.

he doesn’t give a shit about pissing people off. actually that’s his prime motivation for existing.

what he wants is tiktok to owe him

And TikTok wants to be in his good graces. So they shut down their service voluntarily, then when Trump says they get the 90 days, they bring it back up immediately and thank him loudly for it.

First I joked about this. And while I don’t use tiktok. The biggest problem of the government and the court being able to just ban tiktok is the ability to censor the internet. And thus ban access to parts of the internet what is worrisome to me.

And saying it is because of privacy. Well it isn’t. Otherwise they should create a privacy bill for all social media platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook and alike.

Those who are against banning TikTok must be happy now? You’ve got President Trump on your side.
