What are the alternatives though?
Mastodon, Friendica and Loops.
More decentralisation right? Well, that’s great and all but they will fail because they are too technical (the friendica website), and you can’t expect people to choose servers and whatnot. Bluesky did it perfectly, the app is clean and nice and you aren’t expected to know whatever the hell is a server or to choose one.

😩 I doubt they really actually care. It’s just about getting ahead of the curve and guessing where others will migrate towards. If they really cared, they’d have mentioned the fediverse and invited people to follow them on a self-hosted instance.

It’s not so easy from their point of view. Most news agencies, outside of the big mega corps, no longer have tech departments. All they have is an IT person to handle laptops and perhaps one webpage, and some community managers doing social networks. And those positions don’t always have the transferable skills to host a server more complex than WordPress or square space. Remember those services have been commoditized by host companies to the point of being plug and play options on forms. The same hasn’t happened for fediverse services yet. On boarding people with such skills takes time and even then the problems just began, as managing the data stream from the activity pub is a full time job.
There are mastodon hosting services out there. Just like there are matrix hosting services and much more.
My company has been looking to replace Skype with Matrix, and I got to say. The quality of service and feature completeness is just not there yet. Microsoft is shit, but the vendors for stuff like Matrix are still underwhelming.
Oh, and even if you find a good vendor, it’s a new recurrent expense that used to be free. Melon’s subscription notwithstanding.

It’s not missing from matrix. It’s missing from vendor’s support, mostly.
Yeah odd they haven’t switched to bluesky or mastodon, wouldn’t be that much different from twitter

Yes! It’s just automated posts but at least they keep it running. I sometimes repost some news from there to try to show them that there’s someone looking at it haha.
