There seem to be many long term Linux users switching to Windows right now, and posts like these got me inspired to do the same and report my experience doing the transition.
I’m just done with Linux OS altogether, and I think Windows is the better choice for me.
Why?
- Linox is too barebones for me.
I accidentally left the console mode on my Asus ROG Ally recently and was overwhelmed by the amount of customisation options I had available.
Before, I was a KDE user, and one single setting app just felt… lackluster.
But then I saw, that Windows had three different ones, and I find this way more elegant. Three is three times better than one, did you know that? Checkmate, Linus 😉😎 - The CEO of the Linux company has made some very unsettling decisions in the recent past.
The most prominent example is making the kernel open source.
I don’t know, if you’ve ever heard about this weird concept before, but let me explain it to you in layman’s terms. This basically means, that my laptop is now fully exposed to hackers! 😳
Wimdows on the contrary is way more secure, because there’s no hacking instruction available on file sharing sites like GitHub. I now feel way safer, knowing no one can access my search history on MS Edge 😎
Also, speaking of, thanks to the sponsor of this post, South VPN, i am now totally safe against evil hackers! - I really like the recommendations in the start menu.
On Linus, I always had trouble finding applications, but here this decision has already been made for me.
This is how good UX works, you nerds.
The software selection is absolutely great, especially because it usually integrates very well with my OS. Without that, I would never have discovered a neat app called “Tik Tok” for example. I wish I would have used it sooner, I’ve never been as politically informed and entertained before in my life! - The AI features are stunningly amazing. I’ve bought the newest Surface device, but it came with Linux pre installed and couldn’t make full use of the hardware.
There’s a highly sophisticated AI chip, basically a small brain, built in, which takes a screenshot every few seconds and adds some OCR layer on top of it.
It’s really amazing how innovative this OS is! - Linux feels “stuck”. It’s basically version 6.x for over a year now, but Windows is already ahead 5 versions. Using such old software just feels wrong and is at least 1,8333 times less secure.
I could continue that forever, but I think you should just check it out for yourself. It’s amazing!
The installation is really quickly done. It only took about 4 hours, some minor regedits, and another 4 hours again because I had to reinstall due to virus I got when downloading Fortnite.
I chose the Windows 11 distro instead of the Windows 10 variant, because everyone knows 11 is the bigger number and therefore superior.
Spoiler
Obvious /s, fuck you MS.
Linis doesn’t even have the directx
Didn’t notice which com I was in - well played.
I was like, onoo, some lost lemmyan has mixed up communities again
Until I took some time to read 🤭
Had me until the first point. Well done🤣
You forgot that Windows gives you a simple error code to pass onto the support desk when it crashes! Linux, on the other hand… well, you have to dig through so many log files - who has time to read all those?
Lucky You! You at least can dig something… My linux just refuse to even crash!
Eventvwr: Am I a joke to you?!
Most of all, since I switched to GNU/Linux, I didn’t need to reinstall my system every single year to keep it performant, so after the first year it already felt stale!
I think the reason I switched back was because my computer was underused - a lot of the memory was free and the fans hardly ever came on, except when gaming.
But now windows uses every bit of my ram, filled up my hard disk and the fans are humming along.
Thanks Microsoft!!
Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Why not just use both? Install Windows, create a Linux VM, and inside the VM, another Windows box, with active WSL too of course.
It’s especially nice when you use their special Microsoft store as sometimes they’re kind enough to install an app directly to your smallest drive, multiple times just in case you can’t find it. It even takes over security credentials so you nor anyone else can get rid of the files!
So nice to finally use all of my 516gb SSD, thanks Microsoft!
The CEO of Linux is a fucking nerd, I hate nerds
I can’t believe you forgot to mention the worst offender.
Packaging.
For some reason, Linux insists on the asinine practice of hypercentralisation where you’re only allowed to install programs from a single approved website. The rest of us are living in 2025 but Linuxists seem to be stuck in 1984. It is literally baked into the system (with a healthy dose of trademark infringement (I mean, Pacman? Seriously?)). Besides the obvious restrictions on user freedom, it would only take one bad actor to call into question the safety of the whole walled garden. Trust is the user’s prerogative. A truly open ecosystem would let the user decide whether to get their software from Microsoft, from a third-party Russian website, the seven seas, from a lost-and-found USB stick, whatever.
(also, I don’t want to be That Guy, but not having a large language model baked into the kernel for optimal performance in 2025 is fucking stupid)
