They’ve already told us who they want to lead them. As long as they support Hamas, they will continue to suffer.
Fuck you for supporting genocide
An even bigger issue IMO is: who do we trust to help ensure a fair election in Palestine. The country has been devastated by genocide and would have difficulties running an election with ongoing setrler attacks in the west bank. The US absolutely doesn’t have the credibility to do so - maybe someone like Canada or Spain could help?
Is there anyone who isn’t an Israeli ally who also isn’t opposed to Islam who has the capability to vet the election?
Spain and Canada are two countries that come to mind. The former was specifically outspoken about the suffering of Palestinians - the latter just generally has a reputation for fairness and multiculturalism.
The election is the easy part. What happens next is even more difficult. Would Hamas allow a transition of power? What if Hamas wins an election? Would either new leadership or Israel be willing to negotiate with each other?
We’ve been down this road before.
I mean, in one sense the whole thing is laughable. You’re sending people back to a heap of rubble that used to be their house, with nowhere to get food or water or use the toilet. And then you’re going to talk about what’s really important is fair elections.
The issue of fair elections in the fall, and in particular reducing Hamas’s influence, is important. Sure. But the issue of making sure no one shoots them this evening because they went out to get some water is also important.
The common solution in both, I think, is putting an end to Israel being the one to administer the Palestinian territories. Until that happens, with military force to back it up, a lot of this conversation is pretty moot I am sad to say.
