Summary

A poll commissioned by Danish and Greenlandic newspapers revealed that 85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S., contradicting Trump’s claims that the territory prefers American rule over Denmark.

Only 6% supported U.S. affiliation, with 9% undecided.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute B. Egede reaffirmed the push for Greenlandic independence, rejecting both U.S. and Danish governance.

Trump has argued Greenland is vital for U.S. security and suggested force as an option.

Meanwhile, Denmark seeks to maintain unity with allies while opposing Trump’s ambitions.

“The people of Greenland are not happy with Denmark,” Trump said Jan. 21. “You know, I think they’re happy with us.”

This is pretty much the same shit Putin said before invading Ukraine

Having said that, the US is great at invading. Have no doubt, they would overrun the country in a day.

Having said that, the US is absolutely terrible at occupying and keeping territory, any territory. At least since WWII they never managed to hold anything and always got its ass kicked like there is no tomorrow. Afghanistan, anyone? Iraq? Vietnam? All success stories. The US invading Greenland would be it’s undoing.

It’s the 21st century. Many of us are educated enough and have a strong enough image of what a country is. Any country may try to annex any land, but they’ll almost always face resistance. Even in the event of a full annexation, you can’t stop the people from revolting, essentially making your country look as miserable as possible to everyone. Heck, even the full cleansing of an entire population won’t guarantee you’ll reach long-lasting stability on annexed lands; people will hide, repopulate, teach their descendants about their past and forever torture your nation and its people, however horrifying of a worldview it may sound like.

I remember reading somewhere that some department in the US gov have a paper on their inability to annex or even control foreign lands and their people. Essentially, it doesn’t matter if the USA has the most powerful military in the history of humanity; it cannot conquer the minds of people today, and will suffer from instability for a very long time.

Not really, on virtually any poll with enough people, something like 10-20% of people will always be contrarian, no matter the question. You could ask if kicking puppies is evil and 15% would answer “it’s okay sometimes, as a treat”.

Could also be trolls, considering that the idea of a left leaning nation randomly joining a copy of 1930 Germany is pretty bizare

Yes, but with trolls I meant people going “What bullshit is that? Hell’s gonna freeze before that happens, and this poll doesn’t have a real impact anyway, would be funny to vote yes.”

I would have thought people worldwide had learned after Brexit that a vote on national sovereignty is not a proper avenue for trolling, but alas.

It’s a poll by a newspaper, not an official referendum. Of course people will take it less seriously

Canada was similar and I wondered who the hell these Canadians are who want to join the USA, and whether we can make them happy by just sending them there.

Something being vital to your security doesn’t make it yours. It may also be vital to Denmark’s or Europe as a whole’s security.

Maybe if you were nice to them they’ll let you continue using your military base up there without having to go to war with all the rest of NATO.

And being vital to security had absolutely nothing to do with this, Denmark is a NATO country, the US have literally ANY security need for Greenland they just give NATO a call and it will be done on Greenland, the US already have several military installation on Greenland done this way, including extremely critical installations like ICBM early warning radar facilities.

Security need is NEVER an excuse for the orange to pull this move.

What makes it yours is the military ability to conquer it and keep it. Which is why Greenland and Denmark should be vigilant:

Well this should put the question of the US annexing Greenland to rest, as we know Donald Trump has historically been very good about following the democratic will of the people.

Not surprising in the slightest. Greenland has to varying extents been affiliated with the Scandinavias for more than a thousand years now, whilst the connection to the US is… nonexistent.

The 6% are probably bored people who think that everything is awesome in America, and when they join they’ll get awesome big cars and guns and rockets and superheroes and a Disneyland and cool flavours of Coke they only have in the US.

And ok, those 6% should pack up and go live in America then. Idiots.
