The difference is: you can now create your own circle if the existing spaces are not to your liking.
There is now a greater separation between the medium and the content. The platform can no longer dictate the content, it is instead the responsibility of the users to set and agree upon their own rules.

The issue is that both, the walled garden social network as well as the free alternative are run by people. People are the problem.
The solution is to have plants make a platform. But then people will show up and then its ruined.
