Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said that “cocaine is no worse than whisky,” as he suggested the multibillion dollar illicit trade in the drug could be “easily dismantled” if it was legalized worldwide.

    He isn’t wrong tbh. Yeah, you can argue about what negative effects are worse than others, but they’re roughly equivalent in degree of severity.

        Alcohol has powered humanity for centuries. There are theories that agriculture was born from the need to raise plants to make beer. (Early beers were lower in alcohol and probably easier to store than bread.) Unfortunately, we learned how to distill much more pure alcohol shortly after.

        Ethanol is actually quite useful in many actual medicines now and is also a great solvent. It’s also one of the better solvents for oil extraction out of plants as well.

        But yeah. Alcholisim was not fun and it seriously fucked me up in a number of ways. Thankfully my heart, liver and brain have mostly recovered and am no longer a detriment to society myself.
