We’ve been hinting that this year is going to be huge, and we’re ready to share why… in two weeks on Feb 25th, at our Framework (2nd Gen) Event! We’re holding this launch event live in San Francisco and streaming to our YouTube channel at 10:30am Pacific that day. You can sign up now to get notified when the stream starts. The last time we held a live launch event was in March 2023, when we unveiled Framework Laptop 16 and two new versions of Framework Laptop 13. It’s been amazing seeing the interest in these products and the incredible ways the community has been using and extending on them. We’ve been heads down working for the last two years on an even bigger set of announcements.

For this event, in addition to bringing in press and partners, we’re opening a pool of invites to the Framework Community to attend the event in person, meet the team, and get hands on with our newest products. If you’re a current Framework fan and are in the San Francisco area (or are able to handle your own travel to us), you can apply to attend in this sign-up form. We expect we’ll see a lot more interest than we have available seats in our venue, so we’ll likely need to downselect from applicants.

We will be opening pre-orders on at least one new item that day, so if you’re in the market for repairable, upgradeable, long-lasting consumer electronics products, you may want to create an account ahead of time to be ready. We’ve scaled up our e-commerce infrastructure massively, but we expect the site will still be under heavy load.

Five years in, we’re confident that we’re on a fast path to achieving our mission to remake consumer electronics. We’re eager to continue supporting and scaling the ecosystems around our current products, and we’re ready to bring this mission and product philosophy to even more of the world, one category at a time. It’s going to be an awesome day, and all of us in the Framework team can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on!

For a hint at what we’ll be announcing, head to the event page.

I can’t make much sense from their hint, but I’m guessing this is related to when Nirav asked the community what category they should branch out to next, after laptops. I’ll see if I can find the post again and link it here.

What are your guesses? In any case, this is a very exciting announcement!

Edit: framework community discussion here.

If it is a new chassis that will still fit my 13 board/parts, I will be ‘upgrading’. Also new improved speakers will be welcomed. I have a first gen and the dents in my chassis are starting to become an eye sore.

I also hope they bring a new bezel color that I would like. Still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on the transparent one back in the day

I honestly can’t stand when companies are vague or cryptic about product launches or pre-sales.

Don’t make people waste their time on a product they may not even be interested in. If you’ve got a new laptop coming, say so. And I’ll decide whether to invest time to look into whether it’s something I want.

Cant you make that decision on the 25th? I mean you need some kind of summary for an event and why people should join (in person).

Not to mention that their graphic is basically a lift of something by Guillaume Singelin. Can’t find the one I’m thinking of rn, but I’d bet my lunch money.

Whatever it is, it’s not a repairable phone, so my interest is nearly gone. LOL

If it’s a new laptop, I really hope that the internal components can be swapped into their gen 1 chassis.

The idea of Framework is less waste, upgradability, etc. Having new products come out that aren’t compatible with older generations kind of defeats the point of their goal.

My guess is a hand-held console like the Steam Deck? People have already built them using the 13’s mainboards and the newer integrated graphics on these are better than the Steam Deck. Bonus points if they aren’t introducing a new mainboard at all but rather just the screen / chassis / joysticks for a handheld that uses the existing mainboards.

My guess is a hand-held console like the Steam Deck?

Not to sound pessimistic, but would there actually be demand for this? Seems very niche.

Even Steam Deck doesn’t have mind-blowing sales, and I find it unlikely that Framework could even get close to a fraction of the sales that SteamDeck has, unless they’ve actually partnered with Steam to market them.

I wish they’d just bring a repairable smartphone to North America.

I do agree that it’d be niche, but if they are able to re-use the existing mainboards it could be an ‘easy win’ for them. I too would much prefer a smartphone.

Yes, I can only imagine that they would make this gen 2 product compatible with their gen 1. And that gen 1 products can be reused or repurposed for other tasks. A Framework NAS would be pretty neat.

@naeap @festus A controller, a LAN party, and bowl of cheetos are 3 big hints at gaming. Those clues point more toward a mini-PC than a handheld.

Yeah, saw that too late on my small screen and deleted my comment afterwards. But seems federation was faster than me…

Actually, seeing the bolt and the gaming, is this related to an external GPU, like the enclosure for the RX 7700S? But not sure how the yoga pose is related.

Edit: or maybe they are more than one product? Like a new GPU, a new accessory and a new device?

I’m thinking a mini-pc of some sort. The circle and yoga pose make me think Chrome (OS?) and Arch. Gaming could relate to some partnership with Steam or Xbox. Alternatively, maybe something about VR?

My first instinct is to connect it to the rumors around the Valve Fremont. But my brain thinks that’s pretty unlikely.

Seems like it could be multiple things. More colors, a convertible, something powerful? and something about gaming is what I would interpret this as.

I don’t know if snapdragon elite is compatible with framework FOSS goals, but if so that’s a thing I’d like to see. Currently considering a thinkpad 14s gen 6.
