Happy Valentine’s Day! Meet our Lovebirds, Gaia & Galileo and Byron & Fern!
Gaia (left) and Galileo (right) are two bonded Great- Horned Owls serving as ambassadors at The Center. Gaia is a loving protector of her mate, Galileo, who joined us in 2006 after an injury that left him blind in his left eye. Gaia has been with us at The Center for Wildlife since 2011 after falling from her nest and fracturing her wing. You will rarely see them more than a few inches apart, as Gaia has taken to grooming Galileo’s feathers and calling beside him. They, too, are getting into the Valentine’s spirit, and you can hear them calling together in the late afternoon/early evening from November through February. They have also served as foster parents to over 40 young, orphaned great-horned owlets that have come to our center for recovery.
Byron (left) came to us in 2007 with a fractured wing after he was hit by a car. He is one of our village elders and can often be seen right in his front window, soaking in the view of the forest. His mate, Fern (right), came to the Center in 2018 after being struck by a vehicle and sustaining head trauma. Byron and Fern not only provide a valuable service to their species by teaching the public about barred owls, but this loving couple also provide a valuable service in the medical clinic as a foster parents for baby owls.
