There are more regrets regarding knee surgeries than there are for gender transitions, statistically speaking. Not to mention that detransitions are often a result of the transphobia present in our society.

Also some of the detransitioners face a lot of ostracism from their communities and are being threatened to “stay in line or else” to push the anti-trans message.

Idk. There have been cases where people have regretted having the treatment. They are few compared to the number of people who think that the treatment was the best thing they ever did, but they do exist. I guess that being trans might cause some effects, like people being mean and bigoted or just the stress of knowing that you don’t fit in to what society seem to expect you to. I think prioritizing mental support through therapy might be a good start before the physical treatment. It will be good for both those that would regret the treatment but also for those that will get all sorts of weird interactions with others during the transition.

Is this the comment you’re talking about?

Tacking gender dysphoria is part of taking care one’s health and trans adults can make informed consent about their lives.

Therapists are not needed in most cases.

… most psychs I’ve met are reluctant to prescribe antidepressants even to folk with a medically verifiable history of suicide without simultaneous therapy.

Tackling depression is taking care of one’s health, and depressed adults can make informed consent about their lives, but that doesn’t automatically mean medical professionals, especially psychs, are ready to write out a script on patient request.

Anti-depressants aren’t the same thing as hormones. As HRT is much safer especially when using the patches.

I don’t think it’s healthy to tell people not to have therapy for any problem in the realm of mental health. Now I’m not saying you should stick with a provider that tries to de-legitimize your journey.

However, the number one reason people end up regretting their transition is because of the rejection they get from family members. Having a therapist that can help you learn how to deal with these types of feelings of rejection from people who are supposed to be supporting you is an important part of a successful transition.

This isn’t even mentioning how incredibly difficult it is to be transitioning in the regions outside North America, Western Europe and Oceania. We don’t need this kind of talk anywhere.

This case-note retrospective has a higher rate of detransitioning than you have claimed here, though the sample size was smaller than would be ideal. The ‘under 1%’ claim is chucked around a bit in media but I have yet to see a solid source for that claim.

    https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/bjpsych-open/article/access-to-care-and-frequency-of-detransition-among-a-cohort-discharged-by-a-uk-national-adult-gender-identity-clinic-retrospective-casenote-review/3F5AC1315A49813922AAD76D9E28F5CB#

I would be interested in reading other studies on this.

The <1% detransition is from people that find out they were wrong about being trans/their gender. This excludes reasons like assholes pressuring them into detransitioning, assholes not supporting them or asshole governments stopping their treatment for example. Does this study account for that?
