Politics are affecting increasing amounts of people, it makes sense that there would be more discussion of it.

No, politics is everything. All subjects are political. It is the nature of being social animals. Talking about now we should operate together is basically our thing.

Politics and social media both have a major impact on your life. Imo it’s impossible to disconnect (pun intended) them from each other. Social media is basically the 21st century version of the town square. People talk about politics, that’s just how it is

Exactly. Politics is people debating and discussing their competing visions for how the world should be. Beyond close family connections, social media is for connecting large numbers of people. Most of the questions that are relevant to large numbers of people are political in nature.

Unsubscribe from political communities and people who talk a lot about politics, done. It’s up to you.

Problem is, it seems to flood into any community. Just annoying

I GOT tired of some of the political subs on reddit, All they post is what goofy thing trump did, and not what he is actually doing, and i suspect theres a hidden agenda why they are pushing like MSM does.

No, you remember when what you saw on social media wasn’t political. Now you’re older and pay attention to it.

Social media was political since day 1.

I mean politics does affect our lives but also I like using social media as a way to escape life. Idk I’m in between wanting and not wanting it

Have you tried using your subscribed feed, other custom feeds, and interfaces that enable keyword filtering?

Content filters are your friend here. It’s the only way of making social media barely tolerable. You just need to keep updating it constantly as next week there’s going to be a new “existential crisis” that nobody can shut up about. Here’s a list of keywords to clean up your Lemmy feed by quite a bit if you’re interested:

united, ceo, c.e.o., brian thompson, health exec, luigi, uhc, rednote, trump, elon, musk, nazi, fascis, israel, idf, ice, dei, palestin, gaza, project 2025, deport, kirsti, deepseek, rfk, billionair, republican, far right, far-right, maga, DEI, ‘DEI’, doge, LGBT, pronoun, trans, gulf, christian right, nancy mace, abortion, immigrat, gop, migrant, x, measles, pedo, transgender, queer

I’ve been posting and chatting with people on RedNote or Xiaohongshu for about a month or so and there’s very little politics content there, which is refreshing! There’s a few Americans who can’t kick the habit, but I usually either block em or tell the app not to show me content like that and it’s pretty good about it.

Hey, if OP wants social media without politics, that’s where you’ll find it. I get it. It can be tiresome to see every single media source just chockablock with political horrors. Sometimes you want a break.
