The UK public… having broadly socialist views but voting Tory ever since the Whigs stopped being a thing.

I think this is largely untrue. The public might have slightly left-wing views when it comes to the economy and state services, but I’d stake any money that if it was remotely feasible to build a net down the middle of the English channel to keep out the small boats, they’d be clamouring for it.

The bully has continuously won the last 500 years or so and it was us (especially the us in the UK). But we have some redemption to do and should try to be on the good side of history for once.

Hey, Germany… Y’all want to keep the old “East Germany”?

You better fucking tell every EU country to defend Ukraine!

That’s not a really good point. Most people would love to get rid of those Nazis, People loving to play the eternal victim role, and being a drag on our economy

The United States sucks ass right now. Please, by all means, take charge without us.

I think it’s gonna have to collapse before that will happen. Please help hasten it by imposing sanctions on anything and everything that has to do with us.

Honestly, I don’t think maintaining good relations with the US is something we should be doing at all.

The Americans were always a bunch of evil, self-interested bastards — all that’s changed is they’ve stopped pretending otherwise.

We must not pigeonhole people, not in the US nor anywhere else. As I write this comment there are apparently two US citizens in this thread who definitely don’t appear to fit into your description. [Edit typo.]

Are you not aware how metonymy works? Of course there are nice Americans. There are nice people everywhere. “The Americans” here is being used as a stand in for the actions of their government for at least the last sixty years. Longer, if you include the centuries of land theft, genocide, slaving, pillage, and terror. All of these acts were sanctioned by a government that was elected, supported, and funded by American citizens. This is who they are. The presence of a few friendly faces in a sea of greedy, rapacious cunts doesn’t change much.

That’s got the same energy as a cop showing up to protest the term “ACAB”.

Don’t like hearing it? Fix it. And that doesn’t mean reposting shit to your echo chamber of choice. That doesn’t mean standing with a sign. If you haven’t lit something on fire you’re part of the problem just like all the “good cops”.

Fine, but such a result isn’t exactly surprising with a leading question like that 🙄

Its not really an either or question, and if you explicitly want to ask that you should do so by asking something like “Should the UK support Ukraine against the objections of the US?” Or something concrete like that.

The way the current question is asked leads to the answer as expected as “support” is positively connotated and “maintain good relations” is ambigous and doesn’t make the contradiction clear, hence people opting for the feel good answer of supporting Ukraine.

It is an either/or question, because the US government does not support Ukraine any more and will condemn any country that does.

That’s my point. The original question is not a real either/or question. It’s a leading question that pretends to be either/or.

Edit: looking at the down votes I think some people here really need to practise their reading comprehension.
