Those are ment to grow grass, it looks pretty good if it is well maintained.

The pavement looks brand new so grass probably did not have time to grow yet.

While this helps against flooding, I guess it’s not a lot of fun to bike there.

I think this is in the Netherlands and the pink asphalt on the right is a bike path.

So maybe to prevent people from cutting across the sidewalk from the bike path? No idea.

Edit: A bike parking is just visible at the top of the picture, so Netherlands intensifies.

This is correct. In the left there is also a smooth strip wide enough for use by wheelchair or similar.

Ah! I see. That makes sense.

And being childless, I don’t mind the possible hindrance for strollers either. :)

The sidewalk more on the left doesn’t have the holes. So I think bikes were taking shortcuts across the sidewalk and this was the councils way of fixing that. People can walk on the left without bikes going on the sidewalk.

If you’re not zooming by at 30 km/h, this should be no more than a little bumpy. I guess that’s intended, since this looks like sidewalk/plaza, where you’d expect lots of pedestrians.
