This headline is based on responses to the question “what are your biggest worries about the future of Rust”, not “are you worried about the future of Rust.” So of course most of the respondents answered with a concern about the language.

    most Rust developers

survey participants != all rust developers

In fact, there is no reason for experienced Rust developers to participate in such surveys at all. I don’t.

Hell, the way the survey results are covered (not just here) tells me that maybe we should push for it to never be done (officially) ever again.

Christoph Hellwig, who likened the addition of another language to a cancer and said that Rust should not be “anywhere near a huge C code base that I need to maintain.”

The article misquotes Hellwig who was against making the kernel a multi language project ie C and any other language due to the complexities that may bring. Not against rust per se. Jfc. It’s like people don’t read their sources anymore.

While you are correct in that he was technically not objecting to Rust, specifically, that is out of his purview. The decision was already made so, he needs to get on board or move on with life. Adding to that, his objecting wasn’t even to code that he maintains but a consumer of his API.

Oh yes, it was just about what he said. Also I am excited about rust in the kernel. Just the article wasn’t quoting him right.
