Summary
New York City sued the Trump administration to recover $80 million in FEMA funds initially allocated for immigrant services but later rescinded.
Mayor Eric Adams, facing federal corruption charges, claims the city is owed the money after spending $7 billion on migrant aid.
This legal action marks a shift in Adams’ relationship with Trump.
The DOJ recently moved to drop its case against Adams in exchange for his cooperation on immigration policies, prompting multiple prosecutor resignations.
inb4 prosecution against Eric Adams revived
That’s what I was thinking. What the heck were the terms of the deal that let Adams off the hook? Is Adams completely ignorant of the ways of the Cheeto?
This legal action marks a shift in Adams’ relationship with Trump.
I think the man is betting on Trump becoming unpopular and those who resist him earning the sympathy of the people, for his own eventual salvation.
If that’s his bet, that means the wind is probably turning against the orange utan for real, because it’s quite a ballsy bet.
Meh, there’s little reason to think Adams knows which way the wind is blowing. More likely that he just needs to make a ballsy bet to salvage his career, and going against Trump is a guaranteed political win in NYC.
I think Adams is still firmly on Trump’s side and Trump just doesn’t care about the specific outcome of this particular lawsuit as long as it stays in the headlines and he can use it as an excuse to complain about migrants
I feel like “later rescinded” makes it sound like all the other aid that just got cancelled.
This case is more egregious and frankly scary.
The funds were in the city’s bank account, and the Trump administration went into that bank account and took the money back without telling the city.
The funds were in the city’s bank account, and the Trump administration went into that bank account and took the money back without telling the city.
Close, but the reality is even scarier imo - a random bank employee who was not part of the Trump administration went into that bank account and took the money back without telling the city because the Trump administration ordered them to, even though that order was probably illegal
That’s called theft. He robbed a bank.
Makes me wonder if the governor of New York told him do your job or I’m going to have you removed
Probably reminded him that state charges aren’t pardonable.
Well this is certainly an interesting development. Assuming Trump didn’t give the green light (and I doubt he did, but who knows), Adams may be digging himself into a deep, deep hole. Happy to loan him a shovel btw. Keep working it.
