I would love a feature that allows me to ignore new replies to a post or comment I make. Apollo had this feature for Reddit and I found it really helpful to not get notifications to threads I wasn’t interested in continuing for whatever reason (maybe it was getting a lot of off topic replies, or someone was arguing and I didn’t want to continue to engage, etc.). Essentially it would just disable notifications from a chosen post, ideally triggered as an option in the three dot overflow menu on that post/comment.
I’m in the process of rewriting the notification server for Arctic. I added backend support for muting replies yesterday, I still have some work to do before it’s ready to use, but it should hopefully be within the next week.
The server rewrite will allow muting posts, or individual comment threads.
What’s the point of making a comment or a post if you don’t want anyone to reply to it? You might as well ask “is there a feature that makes sure no one ever sees my posts or comments?”
The whole point of posting is to start a conversation isn’t it?
In addition to the political angle, sometimes I just want to answer a question or provide advice when that is the point of a post but I don’t want to get drawn into long conversations about it. The feature is probably less useful for posts than comments but it seems like at least some folks would find it worth while.
It’s easy to see this being useful in political discussions, for example. On Reddit, it was not infrequent that I’d wind up arguing in pointless circles with multiple right-wingnuts, so I’d want to leave my rebuttals to their BS up for anyone else to see, but otherwise be done with the conversation.
