An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids. Those who adopted the Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result. But the limits of the drafters’ imagination supply no reason to ignore the law’s demands. Only the written word is the law, and all persons are entitled to its benefit.

I’m sorry Iowa. I was there when they were second in the nation to legalize gay marriage. I was so proud to be an Iowan. Shameful what they’re doing to the state. Absolutely shameful. For a state that touts freedom and liberty it hurts to see them roll them both back.
A decade ago I was looking to get out of Florida, because I knew that place was going to get worse. I’ve got family in northern Iowa, very close to the Minnesota border, both states were on the short list due to the trans protections and how gay marriage legislation went. I picked Minnesota, and I hate the fact it’s just become the right choice.
I’m both happy for you and angry at my home state.
