Tom Waits wrote the lyrics in reference to a night out in Copenhagen with Danish musician Mathilde Bondo of the couple Lasse og Mathilde. He supposedly asked her to travel with him, but she rejected, which makes the song all the more bitter-sweet.

Oh wow!! First time I’ve seen him perform outside of acting since Letterman quit. Hopefully it could be a sign he’s back in the studio.
