NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte rejected President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. should annex Greenland.
During an Oval Office meeting, Trump claimed Greenland was needed for “international security” and urged Rutte to support the idea.
Rutte diplomatically refused, stating he would not involve NATO in the discussion. Greenlanders overwhelmingly oppose U.S. annexation, with the only pro-Trump candidate receiving just 1.1% of the vote.

“I don’t want to drag NATO into that” is not exactly a smackdown. It’s a polite refusal to support the idea.
He did even agree that the region is changing and sensitive - the title is closer to the reverse of what was said.

This is the type of reporting that feeds into Trumps hierarchical world view. Anything short of blindly agreeing with what he says is an affront, a ‘smackdown’ even.
