I thought this was a great start to the season.

Who even knows what they are agreeing to in the service agreements? I have had lawyer people tell me they agree to them without reading as well because anything out of the ordinary there would probably be a class action lawsuit or something but in the episode the lawyers all think it is pretty air tight.

And then being able to deepfake stuff that quickly. That would cause so many problems for our society. How are we going to live in a world where it is so difficult to prove what is even real.

I can’t even imagine how deep fakes are going to proliferate, challenge the very basic concept of reality, and the impact that will have socially. It’s happening soon and it’s going to be monumental.

The legal aspect …. All of that will be painful for Judicial systems around the world to grapple with. I don’t think we are really held to the terms and conditions on half of what we sign, since it’s not really informed consent but I may be wrong on that.

I thought this episode was a shaky start. I’ve noticed that black mirror tends to fall back onto existential horror/multiple or never ending consciousness which at first was very effective but it’s starting to become expected. I enjoyed the episode and I liked “our Joan” (fictive level 1?). Smart devious and creative. Salma Hayek was okay, she’s the same in every role but it works for her

I thought it was cool that there was a recursive element to the simulated realities.

Episode was a surveillance capitalism nightmare.

i loved this episode, as it was pretty hilarious. also, there were a ton of Black Mirror callbacks in the Streamberry catalog, including a pic of Will Poulter from his role in Bandersnatch, the Netflix-based choose-your-own-adventure episode, and a show called Inside San Junipero.

There is even a call forward to Loch Henry I think.

Another thing that just struck me is this is another one with a good/happy ending. As long as you don’t care about the “people” created inside the quantum computer that is.

i liked the concept but the second half just devolved into a cheap, awful tone. it felt like a shitty marvel movie with the lady suddenly doing epic bants with salma hayek, rather than the gritty grounded tone like black mirror of old

    i love her hair

The first couple seconds of the episode I was thinking that Billie Eilish was acting.

Idk explosively shitting in a church seems like something Billie Eilish would do lol.

That’s the point of Black Mirror though. It’s like a looking-glass into a fucked up dystopia where things like that happen. On the surface its obviously funny but then the more you think about it the more of the real elements seep through. All of this is wrapped up in a goofy story line for the broader audience.

My wife has had her hair like that for about 2 years now and was so proud of herself lol. She thinks she’s ahead of the curve… I’m like, you’re actually a deep fake existing in a quantum simulation so…

I had an absolute blast! So many good quotes in this episode. Some of my favourites “I hope that you get paper cuts in your hemeroids and die!”, “please don’t kill me, Salma Hayek” and “quam-puta”

Edit to add another of my favourite quotes

“George Clooney is going to be in the show?”

“No, they’re sticking his head on a Thomas the Tank Engine Reboot”

Despite it being comedic and has a happy ending, just below the surface there is still that trademark BM feeling of dread for being so close to home.
