One annoying thing I noticed on Lemmy is that is someone mentions a Community and links to it, that link usually just opens up the “home” instance of that community. While I actually wanted to see it on my instance so I can join it an participate. What is the proper way to do it? Or is there some browser plugin that makes that easier?

    See this post: https://lemmy.world/post/77145

You remove the instance’s domain name from the URL, the same way you remove reddit.com when linking to subreddits. You then append it at the end of the URL with an @. For example, https://lemmy.ml/c/asklemmy --> /c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml

EDIT: Starting with Lemmy 0.18.0, you won’t need to do this manually anymore!

This is kinda ironic because your link shows another similar problem that I’m seeing. If I click it I will end up on another instance, where I’m not logged in. While ideally I would want to see that post within the instance I’m currently on.

It’s a similar issue, but not exactly the same. The way I posted above works for linking to communities, but there isn’t yet a way to link to posts while staying on your home instance. However, there is active discussion about how this should be implemented, so we should have a way soon.
