Hello, I noticed that the ban list on my own instance pretty much populates daily with names I’m pretty sure I never banned. Couldn’t find anything in the doc about this. Does anyone have a light to shed ? Have a nice day :).
As far as I understand
- Bans of a user from their instance get federated so that your instance can do any necessary cleanup, as that user will not be able to post anywhere until unbanned, as users are strictly tied to instances.
- Bans and other actions (mods deleting posts) in communities you follow get federated so your instance can take the appropriate action.
- All of this (and more) shows up in your server’s /modlog, and can be filtered by action and user the action was taken against. It will tell you exactly which mod took which action on which post/user/etc.
Alright that makes sense ! cheers for the detailed reply :) .
Yes. It’s federated as well. Plus the mod log is public so anyone can see it.
Thanks !
It’s a bug where you see the names of users banned on their own instances
Can you whitelist them though? Say if i agree with a banned sub and can now not access from my own inatance? This seems wrong
That’s a good question, I feel like the federated banlist should be opt in for instances.
It looks like every linked instances synchronize modlogs I have same issue now, you can Block this Instances
Alright that makes sense ! Was afraid I had somehow banned hundred of people ! Thanks.
I noticed the same thing and I’m curious about it too. I think it’s just showing people that are banned in communities you are subscribed too. I think that makes sense since the community home server is the one doing the moderation.
If you go to the mod log for your own instance, you’ll see actions on other instances too.
I was just noticing the same thing. It must be
Was curious about this yesterday on my instance too - never banned anything.
