I have my own instance up and running, and am able to see posts from communities I subscribe to, but comments don’t seem to be appearing.
There are a couple posts that have a comment on them, but the rest show as 0 comments in my instance. If I go to the community’s home instance, I can see all comments.
Has anyone encountered this?
You only start receiving comments once you are have at least one local user subscribed to that particular communities.
Still from big instances that are a bit overloaded at the moment you will get some delayed federation of content.
It sounds like they’re already subscribed to those communities
Your instance show zero comments because it’ll only receives new comments going forward. To show old comments from before your instance federated, just copy the link to the comment you want to pull to your instance and paste them in your instance’s search field. It’ll pull the comments and all its children. Maybe in the future there will be a way to do this automatically, but for now you’ll have to do this manually. It’s still useful though, you can use it to pull older comments you want to reply from your new instance.
I had something very similar. It looked like everything was up, but in reality there were loads of DNS errors and other issues. This was because of the poor documentation that directs to unstable config and the docker port mapping not being quite right.
I found running the docker-compose in attached mode very useful to tailing the logs and errors.
I’m also noticing very quirky federation behaviours in which threads getting de-synced between where it’s posted to, and the home instance it is from. I would be curious to see if they catch up over time, or if I’m just creating a larger and larger divergence 😂
You just need to wait, it will catch up over a few hours. Federation is kinda slow right now due to the huge uptick in users and instances.
Yes, I dont see any comments on my instance
It takes a couple of hours or apparently days to sync, and it won’t ever sync old comments. Only after you subscribe.
Edit: I take it back. My instance has been up and running for many many days, and this post only has 2 comments in my instance, but 10 or so in the original instance. It’s this sort of things that’s a total turn off…
I encountered this a couple times in my setup. It could be a configuration issue with the instance too if you are subscribing to the community.
Yup, I’m experiencing the exact same thing. I’ve responded to some questions with zero comments, trying to be helpful, only to find out that numerous people had already helped, I just couldn’t see their comments on my instance.
Jup, same thing here. Lots of errors and warnings in the logs, but no hint what might be the cause…
I guess that’s why my instance doesn’t receive comments.
