Islam is going through a period of radicalization due to the influence of the Saudi petrostate (and to a lesser degree, the Iranian theocracy) peddling ultraconservative theologies. It’s not inherent to the religion.

Obviously not all, but those who aren’t are by definition not the most ardent followers of the faith. You can oppose the fact islamophobia is a thin veil to leverage racism at brown people by various flag enjoyers, and also understand that actually the religion that puts people through ritual circumcision from ages 3-7 and makes it extra brutal by celebrating this with family and sacrificing an animal, often even in western countries - is maybe not the best fucking thing to have around.
The people I know that have gone through this are the most ardent islamophobes you’ll find and helped me realize it’s not my place to tell them all about the virtues of religious tolerance, but their place to tell me about the horror of religious brainwashing that makes people commit such acts, smiling as they do so.
