      Fuckin’ hell man

I started picturing to myself how the Democrats could scream their way to a massive gerrymander-beating victory in the next election (if we have one, which I think this course of action would make a little more likely but still not guaranteed of course), by getting incredibly vocal and direct starting now about how they’re going to be putting all these people in prison for all of their crimes, what the crimes are, video of the crimes, and also listing out some of the basic tenants of good society that they’re going to put back in place in addition once they are done punishing the list of crimes. Putting aside the civil war between the centrist wing and the progressive wing and trotting out some of their wildly popular left-er politicians to take center stage who can talk passionately about it and have some credibility and popularity with the American people, having those people share the stage with the people the boomers like, and all talking about an actual plan which will bring good things that are believable that people can get behind.

And then I got sad because typing it out really brought home how much of a total fantasy it was. Like I couldn’t even get 20% through it before it started to seem like a mockery. And so then I started picturing to myself how else we could make progress towards any kind of good outcome, and every way I pictured led to things going off the rails completely into a country-shattering civil war with no real hope of anything good on the other side, just more catastrophe.

And so then I got sad and didn’t type the comment. I think we’re fucked. Turbo-fucked in the short run, or else chronically perma-fucked in the future, or both. Our time that was extended to us to get away with half-assing it is over, and we’re too addled at this point to actually win, so… what now? I wish I knew some kind of solution I could picture.

how they’re going to be putting all these people in prison for all of their crimes

I think that’s a losing strategy. Even if it would win votes (arguable), if they get desperate and think they might actually have to pay for their crimes they’ll go to even more extreme lengths than they are now. This meeting of the generals, for instance, could have actually been Saddam style purge.

If it’s a disagreement over government, many of the people running things might be willing to allow the votes to happen. If they think they’re going to hang, then it’s “us against them”.

That is true of every criminal throughout history. That is the logic of fear. “Oh, if I call the cops, he said he’ll kill me. Let’s try to resolve things without him getting mad.”

Call the fucking cops. It is time to call the fucking cops. The fear to speak up about the nature of what is going on, and specifically what should be done about it because then they might get really mad, is doing about 75% of their work for them right now.
