I started moving from Reddit to Lemmy a few days ago, and since then I’ve been forcing myself to spend time here and getting myself used to it. I quickly checked the list of popular instances and decided to join lemmy.world and not beehaw because I didn’t like their decision of defederating other big lemmy instances.
I’ve been lurking lemmy.world for a bunch of days, and I like it enough not to look back at Reddit anymore, so props to that. It feels a bit chaotic though, with many tiny communities being created all the time with very few post and comments in them.
Today I decided to take a look at beehaw’s and in perspective it feels so organized and content rich that I’m quite impressed.
I guess it comes with a big amount of moderation and organized content creation work and I wonder how sustainable is that in the long run, but props to them so far for the project!
What do you think about beehaw?
I think they’re really nice people in general, they just have their own purpose that might not align with everyone.
I prefer to join instances that are more open about accepting “non-perfectly-aligned” people, it’s more up to you to fend for yourself and conflicts can occur ofc, but also more interesting interactions can spur from it.
I do understand what they’re doing and I do respect their choices, it’s just not for me, that’s it.
They are like joining a nanny state. Not interested. Removed every group they offer after they defederated from us. They can go play alone in their sand box.
I have to agree with you. It seems to completely defeat the concept of the fediverse for me. I can understand where they are coming from but feels so wrong from the point of this place!
Personally, I find entering various parts of the fediverse more fun on broader general instances with fair moderation. Beehaw sounds nice, but also a little oppressive. And in the end, it’s still a lemmy instance.
I think it’s too early in the post-reddit days to worry about the chaos. Communities/magazines are being built with wild abandon now, but I imagine users will coalesce around a few key ones for each topic. Reddit allowed for infinite subreddits too, but eventually the popular ones took off. There’s no rush there, it should settle organically.
I do find it interesting that lemmy, in general, seems to have the momentum over kbin. But again… early days. I’m just glad they are pretty good at talking to each other, though lots of kinks to work out still.
lemmy.world feels pretty good so far to me. Good active local feed, some good homegrown communities that are working to take off, and haven’t seen too much drama yet. Good enough for now!
I think they are the lemmy version of tildes. not interested in the same large communities, and only really focus on a small heavily moderated semi-private community.
I don’t mind them, but it’s not for me. I just hope their suggestion of having their posts visible but uninteractable by non beehaw instances does not get implemented, I’m scared it would badly affect the fediverse
why would it ? more content usually means more diversity in topics which is a good thing
my line of thought is that people seeing a community they can’t interact with might be confusing and annoying for people.
If it’s completely invisible one the defederated instances, it would probably urge people to go to more public instances, instead of trying to join and overload beehaw (like what we saw with technology community).
I don’t think the fediverse is a good place for beehaw. They want an echo chamber and that’s never going to happen with different instances.
So it seems like a pretty good community to replace the need for reddit, but they apparently require an application to join. I’m not sure what the criteria is, but they rejected my request to join without giving a reason.
There seems to be a bug in the application system right now, where the reason for rejection isn’t delivered to the applicant. So they may not be at fault here.
Yeah, it ultimately doesn’t matter why, I just didn’t realize these communities were so closed-off. Makes navigating a post-reddit reality pretty frustrating.
Is the application to create an account, or to subscribe to their communities? If it’s the former, it seems like it would be better to create an account with some other instance that they’re still federated with.
The criteria is that you don’t sound like a bot or spammer.
Well I said that I wanted to move from reddit out of protest, I am interested in exploring their communities, and that I generally don’t post but I vote and comment occasionally.
So they either have terrible judgement to think of me as a bot or spammer, or there is some other reason. I mean, that’s their prerogative, but it is discouraging.
This doesn’t seem true to me. I put my application reason as (very close to): “To share my personality and views.” And I was rejected. While I’m not bitter, since they can do what they want, that doesn’t seem very bot or spammy to me.
I joined there first but left after they defederated the two instances. I regret joining there at all, but I was very new off Reddit.
Early on (relatively speaking), when everyone first started moving off of Reddit, everyone was suggesting Beehaw almost synonymously with Lemmy. I think that’s how a lot of us migrants ended up there.
Like you, I ended up making another account elsewhere. But I don’t regret joining. I’m just using this account for Lemmy and my Beehaw strictly for Beehaw and nothing else.
I’m on kbin because I want to read and interact with as much of the fediverse as possible but I definitely appreciate what they’re going for.
Over time I might even gravitate towards something like that. But it’s early days right now I’ll see how things play out
I can’t even get my registration to submit.
Does the username you’re trying to register already exist? I heard that the current version of Lemmy doesn’t report already existing usernames to the user. Instead the registration just fails silently.
Try checking this manually before registering.
