From Trystan Williams
Today at work we received some new birds, not only to the centre, but also first in the UK; a pair of Band-bellied Owls, Pulsatrix melanota. Smaller cousins of the Spectacled Owl, with dark coloured eyes and as the name implies, bands on the belly. Absolutely stunning.
This is an old post from 2017, but the Scottish Owl Centre got these Band Bellied Owls.
Regular commenter, sxan, asked if there were any owls similar to the Spectacled Owl, and there are 2 other owls in the genus, this owl and the Tawny Browed Owl, which looks like the Spectacled that had a sepia filter thrown on it. Scan liked these guys, so here are the first ones to have made the move to the UK. I hope you all enjoy them!
So beautiful. Their face markings remind me of the eyes on a moth’s wings.
I can see it!
Here’s one of Tawny Browed Owl as well for comparison:

Beautiful! This is the owl who knows if your connection in Zürich has the information!
