According to another post, after they kidnapped him, they confirmed he was a US citizen and dumped him in a Walmart parking lot.

How is the entire state of Minnesota not on a general strike by now? There’s a paramilitary group marauding their streets and kidnapping and killing people.

A general strike isn’t something you can just do. There is so much behind the scenes support that’s necessary. It’s by design a tough proposition to ask a large chunk of people to put their healthcare, housing, food, etc all at risk with no support. You need mutual aid things like strike funds set up to even have a hope of getting one off the ground.

It’s like this, how willing do you think the average person would be to confront a random guy who seems to be about to attack someone? How much does that willingness change if you can see that guy is carrying a gun? How much does it change if instead of you being alone when you saw this guy you were chatting with 3 of your neighbors and you all decided to confront him together?

You’re certainly right in a way, but on the other hand with social movements it sometimes only takes a handful of people with conviction to get the ball rolling. And my point is, when people’s lives and freedoms are at risk anyway, they might as well lay down their work and go full-time protesting.

I don’t think I could just go on working like normal if my neighbours’ houses got raided by a paramilitary force.

The state leadership could organize and fund the strike but maybe that’d be seen as treason and grounds to send in the army. Though really at this point I want to see a governor try it. Especially Walz who gave up on politics and has nothing to lose now.

What does a general strike in Minnesota accomplish? That’s like you quitting your job because the FBI shot your dog. You think the FBI cares if you quit your job? They flew back home a week ago.

For all the downvoters. A foreign power is occupying your cities. What does hurting your own state achieve? The foreign power wants you weaker.

Another analogy that is closer: Russia invades Ukraine and kills their citizens. In response, a Ukrainian calls for a general strike in Kyiv.

You need to hurt the people that are causing the problem. Minnesota is fighting Trump. Minnesota isn’t the problem.

      A nationwide strike would help.

I get your point and I was considering the same when I wrote my comment. My reasoning is twofold though: First, something has to happen, but what are Minnesotans to do? The legal way is useless because Trump is beyond the law. A strike, while technically directed at the wrong address, would still give the strikers agency, a sense of community and a shared outlook, and a lot of time they could invest into protesting or other means of stopping fascism. Also, I think it still makes sense to pressure a Democratic state government as the Dems are partly to be blamed for all of this, too. (Don’t know if that applies specifically to Minnesota Dems.)

And second, I believe a general strike in one state could finally get the ball rolling in the rest of the US (because I believe the entire country needs to come to a halt and the non-fascist majority has to finally end complicity-by-passivity.

A strike, while technically directed at the wrong address,

Building unity through self harm is self defeating.

You are in a civil war. You don’t attack yourself. Organize a strike in a red state. They are the ones causing the problem.

When a Republican politician goes against Trump he immediately threatens to primary them. That’s what Minnesotans need to do. You are being attacked by other states. Pool your money and target one Republican for retribution. You can’t stop them all. But like Trump and Musk, you can use fear to keep the rest in line.

Dems are partly to be blamed for all of this, too.

Republicans voted for this. Stop blaming the victim. You are like a Ukrainian blaming Zelenskyy for allowing Ukraine to be attacked.

I’m all for strikes in red states, there should be a nationwide general strike with no set end date. But Minnesotans can hardly organise a strike in a red state, so taking action in their own state is the next best thing. Collecting money to target MAGA politicians in elections is also a good idea, no disagreement there. But one doesn’t exclude the other. Re: Dems being responsible, I’m referring to the Democratic political establishment, not their voters. And while this current fascism has its home in the Republican party, a lot of it was enabled or allowed by the Democratic party. It’s paramount for Democratic voters to force their party to go the Sanders/AOC/Mamdani route, people who are actually wiling to fight fascism.

By the way, it seems at least some Minnesotans support an “economic blackout”: https://piefed.zip/c/news/p/936915/minnesota-faith-union-community-leaders-call-for-economic-blackout-on-jan-23#post_replies (Not a strike, I know, and only one day, but it’s a start.)

But one doesn’t exclude the other.

Or you could, you know, just not tell people to punch themselves in the face? “Hey look we are all united in our self harm!” Punch back at those hurting you.

a lot of it was enabled or allowed by the Democratic party.

Yes that was a short skirt those Dems were wearing showing off their trust in their fellow Americans to do the right thing. They were asking for it.

It’s paramount for Democratic voters to force their party to go the Sanders/AOC/Mamdani route, people who are actually wiling to fight fascism.

              Absolutely!

They have been indoctrinated into believing that the only solution is voting harder for the other party which also funds ICE and does not abolish it, but does it slightly less.

I feel SO much safer knowing that they FINALLY caught the cart guy at Target. Mission Accomplished guys, you got him!

My god, our tax dollars are paying for this. I can barely imagine the chain of viciously stupid people that are part of the process that results in this.

Oooh, this is awkward. I don’t really “want” a job restocking shelves at Target.

(Why does this keep happening - I also didn’t want the job of working as a farm laborer…)

Racist segregationists are waging war against America. It’s time to crush this ideology and restore sanity before this whole thing goes up in flames. These people need to be identified, tried, and convicted. No peace with racism.
