Nice change from the “counteroffensive has stalled” doomsaying.

Yeah I wonder what was up with that, was there a propaganda purpose for spreading that which would be to Ukraines benefit?
The offensive wasn’t as effective as everyone hoped in early July. For their credit, blowing up the dam in the south was a very effective move from the Russian against this counter offensive.
It’s more that it was a reminder of reality for the west: Russia is still a big army and attacking a heavily fortified position is hard.
After that the expectation from those who understand things was much, much lower, and it wasn’t expected Ukraine broke through the defense lines. But Russians are weakening and we now see Ukraine going a bit faster. Hopefully September will be nice and allow the offensive to be fruitful.
When I read between the lines I get the impression NATO generals were not expecting things to go as well as the lay public.
