Some people see this which sucks and go “see clearly climate change isn’t real and even though I came to this conclusion because private jets are considered bad and hypocritical I actually don’t care about that either.” I know from experience.
If governments are serious about protecting people
Well there’s your problem
Yeah kinda answered their own premise there.
Yeah, really.
They’re obviously not, NEXT!
Or just implement a carbon tax if you care about the climate.
Or take away rich people’s money if you want to do that.
But proposals like “ban private jets” are just playing a game of whackamole.
I choose (D) All of the above
A carbon tax is really just a fee for pollution. The more money you have, the more you’re allowed to pollute. It needs to scale exponentially so that even Elon Musk would think twice about using a private jet.
All you do is turn it into a flat check that everyone gets once a year. The rich would literally subsidize everyone else. Most people would make money from the tax.
Also, you add in a cap and trade market and eventually reduce the limit to zero. Credits can’t be generated unless you literally bury non-volatile, non-decomposing carbon 500 meters or more under ground.
It still needs to be way steeper than current carbon taxes are. Who wants to get a yearly check for $50 just to let billionaires destroy the planet? We’d all be better off if they were too scared to do it in the first place.
For sure
I mean, what is your goal?
If your goal is to stop climate change, you should tax carbon. Making it a progressive tax isn’t totally unreasonable… but it seems like an unnecessary complexity, since you are essentially crossing a sales tax with a wealth tax - so everyone would need to say how much wealth they owned every time they bought anything in order to figure out how much they would be taxed. Especially since the tax should increase each year to make carbon more and more expensive. Also, most carbon tax proposals take the fee-and-dividend model: all carbon is taxed equivalently, and then all citizens recieve an equal dividend from the money collected. So basically, every time Elon flies his jet somewhere, you get a free burrito.
If your goal is to reduce wealth inequality/remove the power accumulation of billionaires from the world, then you should make some sort of wealth tax. And then once you took all Elon’s money away, he wouldnt be able to fly his jet anyway.
I think these are both important problems. But that doesnt mean we need to solve them both at once, nor that they will both yield to the same solution.
Yea but private jets are a BIG mole to whack and would set an excellent precedent of putting humanity over rich shitstains.
Some commenters here are misunderstanding. This conference isn’t about the environment, it’s about the economy of the world. So the hypocrisy here is that attendees are spending a gross amount of money to get there, instead of spending that money on anything that helps people’s economic standing.
Lets be honest the WEF has never been a genuine attempt to improve worldwide economic conditions.
„economy“ here is code word for rich people, corporations, and politicians meeting to discuss their „interests“.
Its basically G7/8 and friends.
It’s a lot more corporate actually a lot more “buisnesses interests” there to “advance the economy”.
The post didn’t say anything about hypocrisy.
It was implied
Haha you got it all wrong, the rules are for you not for them.
Peasant.
We need a hard wealth cap
Anyone person 18 and over can have up to 1 million in personal networth. After that, all income goes 100 % to taxes. World wide.
Its a very simple rules that requires no other change, yet it changes everything. We can keep capitalism, it’s a good motor to create wealth. With the 1M cap, anyone can do the same as today, just you won’t ever get crazy rich.
Governments get huge cash influx that they can use for free healthcare, free education, universal basic income, you name it. You want to have an expensive house? Go ahead, as long as it’s under 1M. Want to have 5 jet skis? Your choice but it goes off your networth…
This, I think, is the only way to really stop this madness. With that, nobody will have private jets. Companies will have to consist of hundreds, maybe thousands of small shareholders that all decide together. Nobody gets crazy rich, nobody gets to be poor
Since it’s no longer possible to get crazy rich, why commit financial fraud? You can’t keep the money anyway, so that’ll stop pretty quick. Art will be spread around again in musea because nobody can afford to hold a Rembrandt in their personal collection. So now the entire world can enjoy art again. With that, I imagine art prices also going back down to normal again
Meanwhile govt’s can setup independent non profit investment foundations that can invest in new small companies. Gone will be the giant companies, as those won’t make sense anymore and in come so many more smaller companies that will have to work together to build bigger projects. No more single point of failure there. No more “too big to fail”
Journalism? No single person can own a giant news media outlet, there will be hundreds of owners, so nobody can put their personal interest on the front page anymore. Governments can find independent non profit journalism investment foundations too, they can fund anything news that shows to be independent and factual.
Product companies can now actually focus on real quality, real environmental support because you won’t get rich by cheating, nobody gets rich anymore. Want to sell now? Focus on what actually is important, focus on the environment. No more need for Luxury packaging that sometimes is as expensive as the product itself.
No more dumb luxury brands where the logo is more important as a show-off feature than the product itself. Who would buy a 5000K race car if your max ownership is 1M? You’re no longer showing off your riches, you’re showing off that you dumb.
Private Jets? A single jet costs so much that your need dozens, if not hundreds of people together to buy one which kinda negates the “private” part. We can sell them all off and keep only a few for things like medical emergency flights or something where it makes sense to have a smaller plane.
With all that, nobody will become extremely powerful anymore either. No longer will billionaires be able to push people to get their egocentric ways.
I see a wealth cap as a perfect solution to so many problems we’re facing today. It won’t solve everything, it won’t cure cancer, but fuck, it would fix so much…
I guess I’ll just exist in an economic limbo where technically I own billions in assets but also have slightly less billions in debt. That way my networth always exists above one million!
There are no easy answers. Every time someone comes up with an “easy answer”, someone else comes up with a way to exploit it. Especially under capitalism. In fact, that’s exactly what capitalism is. Finding ways to exploit rules to benefit personal wealth.
Easy: We do the obvious rules, and if anyone is found exploiting loopholes, we all go to their house and beat them to death with bats.
Eventually, all the shady pieces of shit will be gone!
(/s but not really)
1mil is nothing for net worth. This is why no one takes those of us who want to actually tax wealth properly, seriously.
On top of that, most govs get a fuck ton of money, they just spend it on shit that doesn’t actually help it’s citizens properly.
I think you’re missing the point of the government. Protect the wealthy.

LOL
if you really want to stop climate change, don’t ban private jets- instead, just get all the world’s largest companies to stop making things. that’s right, folks! it really is that simple :)
Not sure what the point you are making here is…
Probably to slander the idea by associating it with such a terrible idea as, “stop producing anything!”.
They’re trying to paint the idea as ridiculous instead of an obvious step.
