With warming set to pass the critical 1.5-degree goal, scientists are warning that the world is on course to trigger tipping points that would lead to cascading consequences — from the melting of ice sheets to the death of the Amazon rainforest — that could not be reversed.
There headlines have only ever been successful at driving apathy
A more impactful would describe the expected economic costs of passing 1.5C, along the lines of, “Climate change expected to cost 1.5T per year, and growing, as earth passes 1.5C threshold”
The only thing the average person actually cares about is money
Note: 1.5T is an arbitrary number. Look up an actual analysis of the economic impact of climate change to find a more reliable number
’ The only thing the average person cares about is how it affects them ’
People see “climate tipping point” in the occasional headline but don’t realise what it means ; Bigger and stronger storms, higher AND lower extreme temps, more flooding, more wildfires, more damage to homes and infrastructure, rising cost of living, higher socioeconomic disparity where the rich can live the lap of luxury in their highly reinforced hillside homes, while the displaced get tents that couldn’t survive the winter and promises of caravans.
From their homes becpming more at risk of weather damage, their insurers have removed the policy that covered flooding in their area, because their home was built on a flood plane thanks to developers not thinking of anything but money, and the river keeps rising every time it rains hard.
Theu don’t realise that the amount of potable water is highly dependent on their local water treatment plants not being flooded (and also if the local meta data centre is or is not running)
They don’t think about how they’re spending huge amounts of electricity to keep their homes cooler than the outside by pumping the heat out with their own personal house refrigerators, instead of building the house out of appropriately insulating materials in the first place.
In other words; This joe bloggs who you’ve deemed a moneygrubbing “I dont care about the climate” newsreader is more likely to be a member of the exxon board if they care more about the economy, and at that point they aren’t reading the news they’re the ones WRITING it. Because for every "World’s scientific community comes together to ask ‘can we PLEASE just clean up after ourselves?’ ". There are 500 “millennials are ruining the mom and pop gas station” and “why you need an 8 cylinder 6.5 litre engine in your car”
All to distract the population from the fact that there are 23 companies making 70% of the global pollution.
Thank you The Industrial Revolution & ‘Capitalist’ or should I now be saying ‘Feudalist’ changing the world from ‘Global Warming’ understanding to ‘Climate Change’ misunderstanding of what is happening. I been complaining about that ever since it happened.
Apathetic people starve just fine.
