I am looking to migrate my personal mail to a free service that has reasonable storage space, supports IMAP, and is headquartered in the EU. So far GMX.com is the only one that fits the bill, but the free tier benefits are a bit too generous. Is there a catch?
I’ve been there with my main e-mail address for the past 25 years.
The catch is that their webmail page sucks monkey balls, is loaded with ads (including in your inbox), and every time you log in, they try to rope you into a paid “upgrade” using the worst UI tricks and dark patterns known to man.
Their app sucks, too.But if you use ublock to access the website and Thunderbird to access your mail, there’s no issue.
They make their money by exploiting tech-illiterate people who don’t know how to set up an external mail client, accidentally click the upgrade button, and are too afraid to refuse paying. So in short, someone’s grandma finances your email address.Same boat, 20 years now with them.

This is true, I once clicked it by accident without noticing, then got a bill in the end of the month. Called the customer service and they happily cancelled it and voided the bill, no issues there.
Yeah, they know that if they gave you a hard time, and you took a lawyer, they’d be in trouble.
Cause that type of dark pattern is actually not allowed in Germany.

Gmx is “the” big free e-mail ever since stone age in Germany.
Is there a catch?
Lots of ads for their premium plans. All kinds of ads on the webpage and in their app. Not too mean in general.
I know you specifically requested a free service but if you can spare 1€ a month for it, I highly recommend mailbox.org
I’ve heard great things about it, and I might even take it since it’s one measly euro. But still, I want to see what is offered for free
I’ve just switched to posteo , they are located in Berlin, Everything seems to work well, but they cost (a minimum of) one euro a month - what I liked was that It is easy to scale up, and they appear to be very ecology conscious. Ad free, located in Berlin.
I have had it for more than a decade and just switched away. Apparently a lot of spam is sent through them, so I had an issue where an email I sent bounced back. Also their incoming spam filter is bad causing me a five-day delay on one important business email. They also have ads which I don’t really mind since I use adblock anyway. The mailbox cannot be set in new outlook and all automatic filters are quite primitive to set. I haven’t seen any updates at all to it in the decade either, so wouldn’t be surprised if it had a ton of security vulnerabilities. I didn’t know they offer any paid services.
Some relatives still have it, it’s filled to the brim with advertisements which i guess if the catch. I mean the web interface is, you don’t have it when using imap of course. It’s still a dealbreaker for me.
If the service is free, then you are the product. Just pay for mail. Someone here mentioned Posteo. I use Soverin.net. It costs peanuts. Also, make sure you get your own domain name. It makes migrating email to a different provider trivial. It’s really worth the 10 or so Euro per year.
I had an account a long time ago, it was very good. They unfortunately deprecated the UI translations, so everything went German only, which was painful to navigate.
