This is the biggest thing I’m missing from android, a decent file manager! On android my favourite was Solid Explorer.

I’m guessing the built in Files app doesn’t suit your needs? It works fine for me most of the time.

I think it’s quite limited in features, especially for connecting to NAS. It doesn’t support ubiquitous protocols like, WebDAV, sftp, ftp… this reason alone makes it unusable for me.

Readdle’s Documents is a pretty darn good alternative to Files.

Marta. For development and general productivity I cannot do without a two pane file explorer and I don’t know a more mature one than Marta.

    Edit: oops.

That’s the most annoying thing about iOS. Apple really really doesn’t want you to be doing technical stuff like being in control of your own files. They’re all like randomly somewhere over there in the chaos pile and that’s the way it should be. Also, they’re kinda locked down, quarantined and isolated, so that you can’t just go and open any file with any application.

Once you realize that you’re not really carrying a proper computer with you, you’ll begin to lower your expectations. Before that, iOS is going to be a royal PITA to operate. Actually, even then you’re not really operating it. It’s more like sitting in the back of a taxi that sort of takes you somewhere eventually.

It took them 16 years to get to a barely tolerable level, so I guess after another 16 it could be good.

Completely true, but I don’t think Apple wants people to be able to easily manage their files on their iPhone, I don’t exactly see the reason. but it’s probably something to do with Mac sales.
