Fan episode of Octonauts I made for my friends kids. The story was written by a four year old, so yeah.

Loved it! The dad stuck in the hatch for the near entirety of the episode was a nice running gag.

I’m always tickled extra when children voice children in animated stories. And it sounded like the kid’s talking to their actual mom, somehow.
I always wanted to ask: what’s the process here? you give them a raw story, they speak it, you then animate around it? The talk & dialog feels very organic.
Yes, it has a very genuine feel to it! For the lines, instead of having them read specific dialogue I prompted them, so for example I would have said something like, “OK, Captain Barnacles is going to ask you who is with you, so just tell him who is in your family.” and then got a natural response.
Yes, it sounds like that. But did you animate 100% around the spoken stuff, or how does this usually work?
I say usually because I’ve been wondering the same thing with many cartoon shows, esp. when they have funny and not exactly scripted dialog.
Yes, i typically record the dialogue first, then animate after. But I think professional productions have multiple animators working on them and likely the voice actors are following specific direction from the script as my method wouldn’t scale well, ha ha
Do you have anything visual to work with beforehand? Like a barebones storyboard? Probably not if you don’t have a script.
IDK why but I find the idea of animating 100% around pre-existing dialog amazing.
For this project no, everything was done as I went along. But for bigger projects yes, I would start out with storyboards, scripts, etc.
I’m actually meeting with one of my creative partners tonight about possibly making an anime out of his manga, so I’ll be going through a lot of this stuff, ha ha.
