I never bought that he did that because of his back. Because, it’s still the same sitting motion after you get your leg over, you’re still just squatting down to plant your butt, that’s where the stress on the back comes from.
I do the Riker maneuver for fairly low back chairs and usually stools, basically I dont have to lean over at my hips and engage my lower back to stick my butt out to plant it in the seat. Instead its pretty much entirely leg strength and I keep an pretty upright posture.
Im willing to head-canon that he did it once because of his back, and then rest of the times was Franks seeing what he could get away with.
